A comparison between left ventricular ejection time measurement methods during physiological changes induced by simulated microgravity

Stefan Orter et al.

Summary: This study validated the reliability of oscillometric left ventricular ejection time and investigated the changes in cardiovascular responses during head-down tilt. The results suggest that oscillometric left ventricular ejection time can be useful in evaluating cardiovascular function during space flights and in clinical follow-up of patients.

Multiscale Modeling of Vascular Remodeling Induced by Wall Shear Stress

Shiliang Chen et al.

Summary: Hemodynamics-induced low wall shear stress (WSS) is a critical factor in vascular remodeling. However, the coupling effects of WSS and cellular kinetics have not been well modeled. This study established a multiscale model to investigate the interaction between macroscale WSS loading and microscale cell evolution in vascular remodeling. The results showed that regions of low WSS were associated with significant wall thickening, while normal WSS regions did not exhibit evident changes in wall thickness. When the damage index approached zero, the amount and distribution of smooth muscle cells and extracellular matrix reached a stable state, indicating vascular homeostasis.

Summary: The study investigated the inter-vendor comparability of aortic hemodynamic parameters derived from 4D Flow MR, as well as assessed the repeatability of scan-rescan and intra- and interobserver reproducibility. Results showed significant differences between scanners of different vendors, but good reproducibility and consistency within and between observers.

Mechanical deconditioning of the heart due to long-term bed rest as observed on seismocardiogram morphology

Summary: This study used the morphology of seismocardiography (SCG) to investigate the effect of prolonged bed rest on the mechanical performance of the heart. The findings suggest that prolonged bed rest leads to decreased mechanical strength of the heart and increased arterial stiffness.

Summary: This study provides novel insights into the relationship between WSS, OSI, and RRT in AAA patients and normal aging, highlighting the significantly abnormal hemodynamic stresses in not only the infrarenal aorta but the entire aorta. RRT is identified as a marker for abnormal AAA hemodynamics. Further research is needed to determine if RRT or other measures of hemodynamic stresses are the best predictors of AAA growth and/or rupture.

Summary: This study explores the impact of wall shear stress on coronary artery atherosclerosis, highlighting how high shear stress can inhibit the development of atherosclerosis while low shear stress can contribute to its formation. Additionally, the role of wall shear stress on different biochemicals is complex, potentially promoting or preventing atherosclerosis.

Cardiac adaptations to 60 day head-down-tilt bed rest deconditioning. Findings from the AGBRESA study

Fabian Hoffmann et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of prolonged head-down-tilt bed rest on cardiac function, with a focus on strain measurements. The results showed that changes in cardiac function, particularly in strain measurements, appeared to be functional rather than due to cardiac remodeling. Therefore, strain measurements may have limited utility in assessing the impact of physical inactivity or exercise interventions on cardiac function.

4 Day in dry immersion reproduces partially the aging effect on the arteries as observed during 6 month spaceflight or confinement

Danielle Greaves et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the impacts of 4 days of dry immersion (DI) on cardiac and arterial measurements, comparing them to those observed in spaceflight. Although changes were found in cardiac and arterial parameters, they were similar but less pronounced than those seen in spaceflight, mimicking natural aging effects on Earth. Additionally, wearing thigh cuffs during the day did not show any acute or chronic impact on arterial measurements.
