Glucocorticoid Receptor β Overexpression Has Agonist-Independent Insulin-Mimetic Effects on HepG2 Glucose Metabolism

Claudia Sepulveda-Quinenao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of glucocorticoid receptor beta on glucose uptake and storage in hepatocytes, showing that GR beta overexpression inhibits the induction of gluconeogenic genes by dexamethasone and has insulin-like actions.

Presymptomatic Dutch-Type Hereditary Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy-Related Blood Metabolite Alterations

Pratishtha Chatterjee et al.

Summary: The study investigated blood metabolite alterations in pre-symptomatic Dutch-type hereditary CAA mutation carriers and found significantly lower levels of spermidine in this group, which was associated with A beta neuropathology. The results provide pilot data on D-CAA related metabolite signals and reveal biological pathways linked to neurodegeneration and dementia.

FXR signalling: a novel target in metabolic diseases

David P. Sonne

Summary: The gastrointestinal tract plays a crucial role in regulating glucose homeostasis, with bile acids being recognized as metabolic regulators impacting lipid, glucose, and energy metabolism. The farnesoid X receptor (FXR) is an important component of the bile acid-sensing system that affects bile acid pool size and metabolic processes such as glucose and lipid metabolism. Natural and synthetic FXR agonists, as well as FXR-regulated factors like fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19), are being evaluated as potential treatments for metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Creatine Supplementation and Brain Health

Hamilton Roschel et al.

Summary: There is strong evidence supporting the benefits of creatine supplementation on muscle function and health. Additionally, research suggests potential benefits for brain health, particularly in conditions with brain creatine deficits. More studies are needed to determine the optimal creatine protocol for increasing brain creatine levels and assessing cognitive function.

Memory recall involves a transient break in excitatory-inhibitory balance

Renee S. Koolschijn et al.

Summary: Memories are stored by distributed groups of neurons in the brain, with individual neurons contributing to multiple memories. The hippocampus and neocortex coordinate their activity to switch memories on and off by changing the balance of excitatory and inhibitory activity in neocortex. The hippocampus reactivates memories stored in neocortex by temporarily increasing excitatory activity to release memories from inhibitory control.

A Systematic Review of Glucose Transport Alterations in Alzheimer's Disease

Natalia Kyrtata et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is associated with alterations in glucose transporters, possibly leading to reduced glucose transport across the blood-brain barrier and cell membranes, resulting in glucose deprivation and accelerated cognitive decline. Studies suggest that anti-diabetic medications show promise in improving glucose transport capacity in AD patients.

Xanthohumol ameliorates Diet-Induced Liver Dysfunction via Farnesoid X Receptor-Dependent and Independent Signaling

Ines L. Paraiso et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that XN supplementation in a high-fat diet can alleviate hepatic steatosis and reduce BA concentrations in FXR-deficient mice, with a stronger effect in males. XN also induced the expression of CAR, PXR, and GR genes in the livers of FXR-deficient mice, suggesting activation of BA detoxification pathways as the predominant mechanism. These findings indicate a sex-dependent relationship between FXR, lipids, and BAs, and suggest that XN improves HFD-induced liver dysfunction through both FXR-dependent and independent signaling pathways.
