Non-invasive photobiomodulation treatment in an Alzheimer Disease-like transgenic rat model

Luodan Yang et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a common form of dementia in elderly people with no effective treatment available. This study evaluated the therapeutic effect of long-term low-level laser treatment on Alzheimer's disease and its underlying mechanism. The results showed that low-level laser treatment significantly improved cognitive dysfunction and typical pathologies of Alzheimer's disease, and it worked through multiple mechanisms including regulation of glial cells, preservation of mitochondrial dynamics, and suppression of oxidative damage.

Effects of Chronic Photobiomodulation with Transcranial Near-Infrared Laser on Brain Metabolomics of Young and Aged Rats

Fabrizio dos Santos Cardoso et al.

Summary: The study found that transcranial photobiomodulation can enhance brain energy metabolism and cognition, particularly reversing aging-related metabolic changes in older rats. Statistical analysis revealed that photobiomodulation significantly improved metabolic pathways in younger rats, especially in excitatory neurotransmission and oxidative metabolism, while restoring altered pathways in older rats.

Photobiomodulation inhibits the activation of neurotoxic microglia and astrocytes by inhibiting Lcn2/JAK2-STAT3 crosstalk after spinal cord injury in male rats

Xuankang Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that PBM can promote motor function recovery, inhibit the activation of neurotoxic microglia and astrocytes, alleviate neuroinflammation and tissue apoptosis, and increase the number of neurons retained after SCI. It was also observed that PBM can suppress the Lcn2/JAK2-STAT3 crosstalk involved in the activation of neurotoxic microglia and astrocytes after SCI.

Transcranial laser stimulation: Mitochondrial and cerebrovascular effects in younger and older healthy adults

Celeste L. Saucedo et al.

Summary: Transcranial laser stimulation is a safe and effective method for improving prefrontal cortex neurocognitive functions, promoting mitochondrial respiration and cerebrovascular oxygenation. Laser-induced effects on cytochrome-c-oxidase increased with age, while effects on cerebral hemodynamics decreased. Further research on the therapeutic potential in neurologic and psychiatric diseases is warranted.

Photobiomodulation for the aging brain

Fabrizio dos Santos Cardoso et al.

Summary: Longevity is a great triumph of humanity, but it also brings challenges such as age-related cognitive decline and neurological diseases. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has shown promising effects in improving brain functions in aging populations, with studies demonstrating neuroprotective and neuromodulatory capacities in both animals and humans. More controlled studies are needed to further understand the mechanisms and benefits of PBM in older populations.

Photoactivation of TGFβ/SMAD signaling pathway ameliorates adult hippocampal neurogenesis in Alzheimer's disease model

Xiaolei Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that PBMT promotes adult hippocampal neurogenesis in APP/PS1 mice by activating LTGFβ1, leading to the differentiation of NSCs into newborn neurons. PBMT also enhances spatial learning/memory ability in APP/PS1 mice. Additionally, PBMT-stimulated ROS activates the TGFβ/Smad signaling pathway, resulting in upregulation of neuronal markers Dcx and Tuj1 while downregulating GFAP.
