Construction of a circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network revealed the potential mechanism of Buyang Huanwu Decoction in the treatment of cerebral ischemia

Bowei Chen et al.

Summary: This study integrated the circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network to investigate the molecular mechanisms of Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BHD) in treating middle cerebral artery occlusion (MACO) rats. The results showed that BHD improved neurological functions and histopathological changes, reversed the expression of MAP2, GFAP, and VWF in the ischemic brain tissue, and identified dysregulated circRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs associated with the neuroprotective effects of BHD. Additionally, bioinformatics analysis revealed potential therapeutic pathways for BHD through a circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network.

The microbiota-gut-brain axis: pathways to better brain health. Perspectives on what we know, what we need to investigate and how to put knowledge into practice

Anirikh Chakrabarti et al.

Summary: The link between the gut and brain has attracted increasing scientific interest in the past decade, with a focus on the role of gut microbiota in gut-brain communication. Association studies have explored the potential influence of gut microbiota on memory, learning, anxiety, stress, and neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. However, the triggers and mechanisms underlying this influence are still largely unknown, and most evidence comes from pre-clinical studies.

APOE genetics influence murine gut microbiome

Diana J. Zajac et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of APOE alleles on the gut microbiome of mice. The results showed that the richness, evenness, and microbial community composition of the fecal microbiome were significantly associated with APOE status in male mice. Individual taxa associated with APOE status were identified. These findings suggest that APOE alleles may influence disease through modulation of the gut microbiome.

Gut Microbiota Interact With the Brain Through Systemic Chronic Inflammation: Implications on Neuroinflammation, Neurodegeneration, and Aging

Yi Mou et al.

Summary: It has been observed in recent years that the negative effects of the gut microbiota can lead to neurodegenerative diseases and brain aging, although our understanding of this is still in the early stages. The blood-brain barrier, which protects the central nervous system from potentially harmful substances, seems paradoxical in allowing risky factors from the gut to enter the brain. The main mechanism behind gut microbiota-induced chronic inflammation is the dysregulation of gut mucosal immunity.

DNA damage and aging on hematopoietic stem cells: Impact of oxidative stress in ApoE-/- mice

R. Aires et al.

Summary: The study shows that aging contributes to increased ROS levels, DNA damage, apoptosis, and telomere shortening in HSCs from ApoE-deficient mice. The combination of ApoE deficiency and aging leads to exhaustion and senescence of HSCs with elevated oxidative stress and inflammation. The findings suggest a potential synergistic effect of age-related changes and genetic factors on compromising aged HSC recovery and transplantation efficacy.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant genetic influence on the gut microbiome, which plays a key role in human health and diseases. Analysis revealed abundant signals associated with the gut microbiome in metabolic, neurological, and immunological functions, with potential genetic attributes to enterotypes. Gender stratification led to differential associations, and a two-stage metagenome genome-wide association studies emphasized the importance of considering both microbiome and GWAS studies in understanding human health and diseases.

Lipid metabolism and lipid signals in aging and longevity

Ayse Sena Mutlu et al.

Summary: Research has found that lipids play crucial roles in regulating aging and longevity, with many genetic pathways linked to lipid metabolism and signaling. Lipid metabolic enzymes undergo changes during aging and can act as signaling molecules to modulate lifespan and health span. Recent insights into the roles of lipid metabolism and signaling in aging have led to discussions on lipid-related interventions for promoting longevity.
