Biomass-derived activated carbon as catalyst in the leaching of metals from a copper sulfide concentrate

A. Mendez et al.

Summary: Chalcopyrite, the most abundant copper resource in the world, is usually found in low-grade deposits. Traditional methods for exploiting these reserves are reaching their economic limits, making hydrometallurgical methods more suitable. This study investigates the use of biomass-derived activated carbon as a catalyst in the leaching of copper from chalcopyrite, resulting in increased copper extraction and reduced leaching of arsenic.

Environmental costs of abiotic resource demand for the EU's low-carbon development

Rosalie Arendt et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the environmental impact of resource demands for low-carbon development in the European Union in 2050. The results show that the total environmental costs of the materials needed range from euro13.1 billion to euro74.8 billion, with EV batteries causing 45.8% of the costs. The analysis also reveals that mining and processing emissions and resource depletion are the main factors contributing to the damages.

Hydrometallurgical Recovery of Cu and Zn from a Complex Sulfide Mineral by Fe3+/H2SO4 Leaching in the Presence of Carbon-Based Materials

Maria Luisa Alvarez et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the addition of carbon-based materials significantly influences the kinetics of chalcopyrite leaching in sulfuric acid ferric sulfate media, enhancing the extraction of copper and zinc at specific ratios. Future research should focus on optimizing the properties of carbon-based materials for potential application as catalysts in the leaching of metals from sulfides.

Recovery of Zinc and Copper from Mine Tailings by Acid Leaching Solutions Combined with Carbon-Based Materials

Maria Luisa Alvarez et al.

Summary: Mine tailings pose significant environmental risks by contaminating air, soil, and water with metals and soluble salts. Utilizing carbon-based materials such as activated carbon and charcoal can enhance the extraction of zinc and copper from low-grade tailings, contributing to environmental risk reduction and potential industrial application. Additional research is needed to optimize the properties of these materials for better recovery efficiency.
