Habitat impacts the abundance and network structure within tick (Acari: Ixodidae) communities on tropical small mammals

Mackenzie L. Kwak et al.

Summary: The study found that old secondary forests in Singapore have a significant impact on both the abundance and structure of tick communities on small mammals, and are the preferred habitat of the zoonotic tick Ixodes granulatus. Therefore, future disease spillover is likely to emerge from small mammal-tick communities in old secondary forests.

Emergence of the zoonotic tick Dermacentor (Indocentor) auratus Supino, 1897 (Acari: Ixodidae) in Singapore

Mackenzie L. Kwak et al.

Summary: Despite the significant public health risk posed by ticks, research on the diversity of ticks and tick-borne diseases in Singapore has been limited until recently. Only fourteen tick species in five genera have been recorded in Singapore so far. Dermacentor auratus, found in Singapore for the first time, has been identified on a range of hosts, including humans, with DNA sequences at 2 loci provided for further analysis and discussion on the health risk it poses in Singapore.
