Drivers of informal land transformation: perspective from peri-urban area of Addis Ababa

Shiwaye Mersha et al.

Summary: The informal land transformation in the peri-urban areas of Addis Ababa is primarily driven by rapid population growth, inefficient formal land delivery system, and an overheated urban land market.

Influence of environmental factors on bird diversity in greenspaces in an Amazonian city

Jose F. Rico-Silva et al.

Summary: This study assessed the association between bird diversity and environmental factors in 18 greenspaces in Florencia, Colombia. The research found that at the local scale, environmental factors did not significantly impact native bird richness, but native bird abundance was positively influenced by the number of shrubs. At the landscape scale, native bird richness and abundance were positively related to woody vegetation cover, while exotic birds were positively influenced by variables associated with urbanization.

Big cities with small green areas hold a lower species richness and proportion of migrant birds: A global analysis

Lucas M. Leveau

Summary: Studies have shown that bird species richness and migrant species proportion increase towards the poles due to climatic seasonality, with big cities having a negative impact on migrant species. However, increasing the size and number of urban green areas may benefit migrant species presence in cities.

Urbanization negatively impacts frog diversity at continental, regional, and local scales

Corey T. Callaghan et al.

Summary: Urban environments have a negative impact on frog diversity, resulting in a significant reduction in species richness, Shannon diversity, and phylogenetic diversity. Our results highlight the necessity of considering frog diversity in future urban land development decisions to mitigate biodiversity loss. More comprehensive studies are needed to fully understand the impacts of urbanization on biodiversity.

Estimating the impacts of habitat loss induced by urbanization on bird local extinctions

Gabriela Franzoi Dri et al.

Summary: Habitat loss and isolation induced by urbanization have long-term impacts on bird populations, with larger forest patches having lower extinction rates and more isolated patches having lower immigration rates. Current bird species richness is better explained by present landscape configuration than by past configuration, indicating that birds rapidly respond to urban landscape changes and show no apparent extinction debts.

Global effects of land-use intensity on local pollinator biodiversity

Joseph Millard et al.

Summary: Pollinating species globally are declining, driven by land use changes. Low intensity of land use can be beneficial for pollinator biodiversity, but increasing intensity leads to significant reductions in most anthropogenic land-use types, especially in urban and pasture areas. The negative impact of intensity on pollinators is particularly strong in tropical regions, with different responses among taxonomic groups.

Impacts of Land-Use Changes on Vegetation and Ecosystem Functioning: Old-Field Secondary Succession

Javier Perez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study of ecological succession focuses on how plant communities reassemble after disturbance, with new research providing insights into deterministic and stochastic processes. Plant functional traits, dispersal limitation, and soil seed banks play crucial roles in secondary succession studies.

Large trees as a key factor for bird diversity in spruce-dominated production forests: Implications for conservation management

Dominik Kebrle et al.

Summary: The study found that retaining 5 broadleaved trees with a diameter over 70cm per hectare greatly enhances bird diversity in spruce-dominated production forests throughout the Czech Republic. Additionally, tree species diversity has a positive impact on generalist species while negatively affecting specialist species.

Urbanization buffers seasonal change in composition of bird communities: A multi-continental meta-analysis

Lucas M. Leveau et al.

Summary: Urbanization leads to a seasonal homogenization of bird composition, with a more pronounced impact in temperate regions with broad annual temperature range and located in the Northern Hemisphere. Efforts should be made to restore seasonal dynamics in habitats and resources in urban areas of these regions.
