Bibliometric analysis and landscape of actors in passive cooling research

Nicole D. Miranda et al.

Summary: This paper examines the trends and key actors in research publications on passive cooling technologies. The study reveals a significant increase in research activity in the field, with a focus on natural ventilation as the dominant passive cooling measure and a rapid growth in research activity in China. The analysis also highlights promising technologies such as radiative cooling and solar control, indicating a shift towards more sustainable cooling solutions.

Natural ventilation in warm climates: The challenges of thermal comfort, heatwave resilience and indoor air quality

Tariq Ahmed et al.

Summary: This review paper examined the ability of natural ventilation to provide thermal comfort, resilience against heatwaves, and good indoor air quality in warm climates. While single sided ventilation showed the poorest thermal comfort performance, cross ventilation performed better in reducing indoor air temperatures. Windcatchers and solar chimneys displayed even better performance with relatively high ventilation rates.

An investigation on the thermal effects of windcatchers

Ayhan Bekleyen et al.

Summary: The study examines the windcatchers in traditional houses in Sanliurfa, Turkey, finding limited thermal performance in cooling the iwan, primarily by blowing cool air into the hall from night to noon. The scoop forms of windcatchers are found to be suitable for catching the wind, while narrower air inlets contribute to the cooling effect.

The impact of passive design strategies on cooling loads of buildings in temperate climate

Emad Mushtaha et al.

Summary: A simulation-based study was conducted to examine the integration of passive design strategies in a generic residence to optimize thermal performance and minimize cooling loads. The findings show that implementing passive design parameters can reduce building energy consumption by 9.89 kW, representing 59% of total energy consumption. This integration could be significant in cities with limited natural resources and guide professionals towards the potential of passive measures in building design.

Keeping Cool in the Desert: Using Wind Catchers for Improved Thermal Comfort and Indoor Air Quality at Half the Energy

Jamal Saif et al.

Summary: In hot arid climates like Kuwait, energy usage in buildings is dominated by cooling, with schools being a significant contributor. This study analyzed a ventilation and cooling system for school classrooms using a wind catcher for natural ventilation and evaporative cooling. Results showed that using a wind catcher with evaporative cooling could reduce energy use by 52% compared to using air conditioning alone, while increasing comfortable hours to 100%. However, indoor air quality remained poor despite improvements.
