Solidification of chloride ions in alkali-activated slag

Yaguang Zhu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the influencing factors of the chloride solidification capacity of alkali-activated slag, including temperature, pH value, and activator type. The results show that the binder capacity of slag activated by water glass is greater than that of slag activated by NaOH, and the physical adsorption in the solidification of chloride accounts for more than 50% for all three pastes.

Clayey soil stabilization using alkali-activated volcanic ash and slag

Hania Miraki et al.

Summary: This research explored the potential of using alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and volcanic ash (VA) as green binders in clayey soil stabilization projects. The results demonstrated that the coexistence of GGBS and VA in geopolymerization process was more effective, resulting in better performance against wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycles. Additionally, the alkali-activated mixtures showed low carbon footprints.

Influence of metakaolin and limestone on chloride binding of slag activated by mixed magnesium oxide and sodium hydroxide

Zhijian Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of metakaolin and limestone incorporation on the chloride binding capacity of alkali-activated slag (AAS). The results show that the chloride binding capacity of AAS can be increased by up to 50% with the addition of 20% metakaolin or limestone. Different mechanisms for binding enhancement are proposed for these two blended AAS systems.

Thanh-Phong Ngo et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on the durability of geopolymer stabilised compacted earth (GSCE) samples subjected to multiple wetting-drying cycles under different pH and salt concentration conditions. The results show that after 12 w-d cycles, all tested samples had compressive strengths higher than the minimum value required by standards. Samples exposed to pH=4 solution exhibited the highest performance.

Effects of sodium chloride on the mechanical strength of alkali activated volcanic ash and slag pastes under room and elevated temperatures

Pooria Ghadir et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of sodium chloride on the microstructural and mechanical properties of alkali activated volcanic ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, and Portland cement pastes. The results showed that samples with 100% slag exhibited the highest mechanical strength, while the strength of samples with 100% volcanic ash was not significantly affected by sodium chloride. Under high temperature conditions, the addition of sodium chloride increased the strength of samples with 50% and 100% slag, as well as Portland cement pastes, up to a certain concentration, but further addition reduced their strength. However, under room temperature conditions, the compressive strength of samples with 50% and 100% slag, as well as Portland cement samples, decreased with the addition of sodium chloride.

Summary: The research investigates the use of NaCl in cement kiln dust (CKD)-treated kaolinite clay to enhance strength properties and microstructural changes. Results show that NaCl addition increases dry density, decreases optimum moisture content, and significantly improves unconfined compressive strength. The environmentally-friendly method using CKD and NaCl reduces energy consumption, e-CO2 emissions, and stabilizes soil at a lower cost.

Salinity effect on the compaction behaviour, matric suction, stiffness and microstructure of a silty soil

Zi Ying et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of soil salinity on the compaction behaviour of soil was investigated through standard Proctor compaction tests. The results showed that as soil salinity decreased, maximum dry density increased, optimum water content decreased, and G(max) also decreased. Pore size distribution exhibited bi-modal characteristics and the effect of salinity varied in different compaction states.

Spatial and seasonal salt translocation in the young soils at the coastal plains of the Caspian Sea

M. Konyushkova et al.

Summary: The study in the Caspian Sea coastal area revealed strong spatial and seasonal salt translocation in soils at two key sites with similar aridity and lithology but different vegetation and microtopography. The soil salinity variability was found to be more pronounced at the end of the dry and hot season, suggesting a stable spatial pattern over time despite strong seasonal dynamics. The analysis showed a lack of correlation between soil salinity patterns and vegetation at both sites, but a moderate correlation between soil salinity and microtopography at the more mature site in Russia.
