Improving sedimentation and lipid production of microalgae in the photobioreactor using saline wastewater

Zi-Yan Yang et al.

Summary: Saline wastewater was found to improve the sedimentation and lipid production of freshwater microalgae. A salinity of 0.5% or above effectively promoted the settling of microalgae and reduced algal biomass in the effluent. The mechanism behind this improvement involved changes in zeta potential, cell particle size, and extracellular polymeric substance synthesis, which varied with the influent salinity.

Enhancing Algal Yield and Nutrient Removal from Anaerobic Digestion Piggery Effluent by an Integrated Process-Optimization Strategy of Fungal Decolorization and Microalgae Cultivation

Jun Qian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of fungal decolorization and subsequent microalgae cultivation as a promising approach to enhance algal biomass production and nutrient removal from dark brown anaerobic digestion piggery effluent (ADPE). A suitable fungal strain for ADPE decolorization was identified and ADPE was pretreated by fungal decolorization to make it suitable for algal growth. The optimal conditions for microalgae cultivation were determined to achieve maximum algal yield and nutrient removal from the pretreated ADPE.

Phycoremediation of milk processing wastewater and lipid-rich biomass production using Chlorella vulgaris under continuous batch system

Rashmi Verma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of milk processing wastewater (MPWW) as a medium for cultivating Chlorella vulgaris and found that MPWW effectively supported algal growth while reducing the levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and biochemical oxygen demands in the wastewater. The harvested algal biomass exhibited high levels of sugars and lipids, making it a potential source of bioenergy. These findings highlight the potential of utilizing MPWW for both wastewater treatment and bioenergy production.

Valorization of harmful algal blooms and food waste as bio-methane

Sara Plude et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the anaerobic digestibility and biogas production potential of microalgal biomass and food waste. Results showed that co-digestion of microalgal biomass and food waste increased methane production by up to 12.3% compared to mono-digestion. Integrating mechanical harvesting of harmful algal blooms (HABs) with valorization of the collected algal biomass can enhance economic feasibility and generate extra bio-methane.

Recovery of methane and adding value to the digestate of biomass produced by high rate algal ponds or waste activated sludge, used to treat brewery effluent

Richard P. Taylor et al.

Summary: There is potential to anaerobically digest sludge and algal biomass from brewery effluent treatment processes to produce methane. The study evaluated the use of waste biomasses for methane production and recommended operating anaerobic digesters at specific feeding rates. Algal-fed digesters showed higher methane content and lower carbon dioxide content compared to waste activated sludge-fed digesters, making it a promising substrate for biogas production.

Cultivation of microalgae in palm oil mill effluent (POME) for astaxanthin production and simultaneous phycoremediation

John Senith Ravishan Fernando et al.

Summary: Haematococcus pluvialis exhibited better adaptability to higher concentrations of palm oil mill effluent (POME), leading to higher astaxanthin yield and reduced freshwater consumption for astaxanthin production. However, only moderate performance in phycoremediation was achieved. The study showed that POME from Sri Lankan palm oil mills has the potential to be utilized for large-scale production of microalgal astaxanthin.
