Pharmaceutical pollution of the world's rivers

John L. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on ecosystems and human health. A global-scale study of API pollution in rivers highlights the highest concentrations in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America, primarily in low- to middle-income countries with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure. The most frequently detected APIs include carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine, with some concentrations exceeding safe levels for aquatic organisms. Pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health and has implications for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Summary: This study synthesized biochars from three species of algae and used them as long-term adsorbents for ciprofloxacin removal from water. The combination of brown algae and ZnCl2 activator produced biochar with excellent physicochemical characteristics and showed the highest adsorption capacity for ciprofloxacin. The proposed mechanisms for ciprofloxacin adsorption included electrostatic interaction, pi-pi EDA interaction, pore filling, and hydrogen bonding. Additionally, algal biochars not only exhibited potential as innovative adsorbents for water pollution remediation but also provided a renewable energy source through biomass pyrolysis.
