Operational design domain of automated vehicles at freeway entrance terminals

Xinchen Ye et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the relationship between AV sensor capabilities, design speed, and geometric design indicators using mathematical models, providing initial ODD results to improve the AV's detection capabilities at freeway entrance terminals. The results contribute to roadway design and ODD management, enhancing the safe operation of AVs.

Incorporating the standstill distance and time headway distributions into freeway car-following models and an application to estimating freeway travel time reliability

Chaoru Lu et al.

Summary: This study found that standstill distances and time headways follow dispersed distributions, suggesting that microsimulation models should include options for these parameters to follow distributions and be specified separately for different vehicle classes. By incorporating stochastic standstill distance and time headway parameters in car-following models, travel-time-reliability measures can be estimated more precisely and efficiently compared to traditional models like VISSIM.

Impact of Automated Truck Platooning on the Performance of Freeway Mixed Traffic Flow

Seolyoung Lee et al.

Summary: The study explored the impact of market penetration rate on the performance of truck platooning services using microscopic traffic simulations. The results showed that increasing the MPR of truck platoons has a positive effect on longitudinal safety but a negative effect on lateral safety.

Minimum Lengths of Acceleration Lanes Based on Actual Driver Behavior and Vehicle Capabilities

Essam Dabbour et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method for determining the required lengths of acceleration lanes at freeway interchanges based on actual driver behavior and vehicle acceleration capabilities. Realistic acceleration profiles were established using GPS data, and design tables were developed to assist designers in selecting the appropriate length of the acceleration lanes based on the design speeds of the freeway and entrance ramp. The developed design tables aim to provide more realistic and representative design values for the lengths of acceleration lanes.

Multilane Microscopic Modeling to Measure Mobility and Safety Consequences of Mixed Traffic in Freeway Weaving Sections

Mudasser Seraj et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the mobility and safety implications of mixed traffic movement in a freeway weaving section using bidirectional motion dynamics in a microscopic modeling framework. The research found that the maximum flow rate through the weaving section was achieved at a 65% AuV share, and with increasing AuV share, the average speed of traffic remained steady. Additionally, a 95% AuV share could reduce potential conflicts by 94.28%.

Modeling and simulation of vehicle group collaboration behaviors in an on-ramp area with a connected vehicle environment

Haijian Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the vehicle group collaboration behaviors in the on-ramp area and constructs a vehicle group model. Through simulation and evaluation, continuous optimization can reduce congestion and improve traffic efficiency. The combined implementation of different control strategies is more effective than implementing a single strategy.
