Short Food Supply Chains in Europe: Scientific Research Directions

Rosalia Stella Evola et al.

Summary: New configurations of supply chains, specifically short food supply chains (SFSCs), in the food sector have gained significant attention as a solution for rural economic recovery and food system sustainability. This study examines 108 published papers over the past decade to analyze SFSC development and effects from both producer and consumer perspectives. The findings highlight the factors influencing SFSC participation and reveal that the positive perception of SFSC sustainability lacks scientific evidence.

Constructing healthy food names: On the sound symbolism of healthy food

Kosuke Motoki et al.

Summary: The interest in healthy food has been growing rapidly, but the definition of healthy foods can be ambiguous. On the Mechanics of the Organic Label Effect: How Does Organic Labeling Change Consumer Evaluation of Food Products?

Andras Istvan Kun et al.

Summary: The literature has shown two main interpretations in studies of the organic label effect: absolute effects and relative effects. Absolute effects refer to changes in the evaluation of a given product, while relative effects refer to the evaluation difference between organic and conventional products. These interpretations may yield significantly different measurement results but can be merged into one concept.

Impact of color-coded and warning nutrition labelling schemes: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Jing Song et al.

Summary: The study found that color-coded labels such as the traffic light labelling system (TLS), nutrient warning (NW), and health warning (HW) were effective in encouraging the selection of healthier products, while Nutri-Score (NS) and warning labels were effective in reducing the selection of less healthy products. These labels also led to reductions in energy, sodium, fat, and saturated fat content in purchases. The impact of these labels on purchasing behavior was attributed to improved understanding of nutrition information and the elicitation of negative perceptions towards unhealthy products. Comparisons across label types showed color-coded labels performed better in encouraging healthier purchases, while warning labels were more effective in discouraging unhealthy purchasing behavior.

Perceptions of geographical indication labels as quality indicators inside and outside the labels' area of influence: the case of spring fruits

Adrian Rabadan et al.

Summary: Geographical indications (GIs) play a crucial role in enhancing the competitiveness of agri-food products. Consumers tend to associate more attributes with GI fruit labels when they are closer to the production area, emphasizing the importance of origin and quality attributes. Increasing awareness of GI labels beyond their area of influence could potentially boost demand for these products.
