Heart-on-Chip for Combined Cellular Dynamics Measurements and Computational Modeling Towards Clinical Applications

Jiyoon Park et al.

Summary: Organ-on-chip or micro-engineered three-dimensional cellular or tissue models are being used as alternatives to traditional in vitro cell culture in the study of cardiovascular pathophysiology. Microfluidic heart-on-chip devices can replicate cardiac tissue functionality and provide real-time disease-specific information, enabling high-throughput studies. This review discusses the recent advancements and challenges in this field, as well as the future perspectives of organ-on-chip platforms.

Triallyl ammonium amphiphiles: self-assembly and complexation with bovine serum albumin

Denis M. Kuznetsov et al.

Summary: The investigation on the interaction of cationic surfactants with proteins has attracted wide attention. In this study, two cationic amphiphiles were synthesized and their aggregation behavior, solubilization capacity, and complexation with bovine serum albumin (BSA) were evaluated. The results showed that by varying the length of the hydrophobic tail, the dominance of different types of interactions could be achieved.

A Microfluidic System of Gene Transfer by Ultrasound

Cuimin Sun et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic gene transfer, using the acoustic hole effect, can push gene fragments into cells without directly acting on cells. In this study, a microfluidic system integrating a MEMS focused ultrasonic transducer and microchannels was developed for gene transfer. The system showed great potential for early cancer diagnosis and treatment assessment.

Droplet Microfluidic Device for Chemoenzymatic Sensing

Anton S. Yakimov et al.

Summary: A microfluidic system for continuous chemoenzymatic biosensing has been developed, which generates water-in-oil emulsion droplets containing enzymes for bioluminescent reactions. The system demonstrated efficient mixing of reagents in droplets and their successful detection of copper sulfate with a high signal-to-noise ratio. This study highlights the potential of droplet microfluidics as a basis for early-warning online water pollution systems.

High-throughput nanoscale liposome formation via electrohydrodynamic-based micromixer

L. Trabzon et al.

Summary: This study aims to simulate the high-throughput formation of nanoscale liposomes using an active electrohydrodynamic-based micromixer. The presence of an electrical field inside the microchannel generates chaotic advection, leading to an increase in the formation of liposomes. The Taguchi method is used to optimize the experimental design, resulting in a 5.3% error between the predicted and simulated results.

Experimental study on the performance of a mini-scale Y-type mixer with two liquid metal-enabled pumps

A. Mohammad Jafarpour et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the mixing process of two liquids inside an open minichannel in the presence of liquid metal and an electric field. The effects of mixing angle, applied voltage, and Reynolds number on the mixing process were analyzed. The results showed that increasing the voltage signal led to an increase in mixing intensity, creating chaotic advection in the minichannel. The input angle also played a crucial role in the mixing process.

Microfluidic-based processors and circuits design

Kasra Azizbeigi et al.

Summary: Droplets produced within microfluidics have garnered significant attention among researchers for developing complex biological, industrial, and clinical testing systems, as well as for serving as data bits. By manipulating the movements, trajectories, and interactions of droplets within a network of microfluidic channels, opportunities arise for creating elaborate and logical microfluidic circuits. Expanding on this mechanical-based approach, researchers have experimentally developed new logical elements within microfluidics, paving the way for implementing complex circuits in high-throughput platforms for various applications such as tissue engineering, drug testing, and chemical synthesis.
