Selective detection of VOCs using microfluidic gas sensor with embedded cylindrical microfeatures coated with graphene oxide

Mahan Ghazi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving the selectivity of microfluidic gas sensors for detecting a range of VOCs by adding micro- and nanofeatures to the microchannel. The results show an average improvement of 64.4% and 120.9% in sensor selectivity with microfeatures and both nano- and microfeatures, respectively. Characterization of the nano- and microfeatures was done through SEM, XPS, and water contact angle measurement.

Enhancement of Room Temperature Ethanol Sensing by Optimizing the Density of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanofibers Decorated with Gold Nanoparticles

Mostafa Shooshtari et al.

Summary: An ethanol gas sensor based on carbon nanofibers with different densities and nanoparticle functionalization was studied, showing higher responses with increased density and improved selectivity through gold nanoparticle decoration. The devices demonstrated a 300% higher response to ethanol gas after decoration, with reduced cross-sensitivity to humidity and temperature for samples with high nanofiber density.

An electronic nose based on carbon nanotube-titanium dioxide hybrid nanostructures for detection and discrimination of volatile organic compounds

Mostafa Shooshtari et al.

Summary: This paper presents a modification to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to improve the sensitivity to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and enhance the stability of CNT sensors. By growing titanium dioxide nanowires (TiO2-NW) on the surface of CNTs, the sensors show increased sensitivity and reduced response time. Using virtual arrays of an electronic nose (E-nose), new features are extracted from the data and classified using support vector machine (SVM) algorithms. The paper achieves high accuracy in classifying different VOC gases.

Investigating Organic Vapor Sensing Properties of Composite Carbon Nanotube-Zinc Oxide Nanowire

Mostafa Shooshtari et al.

Summary: This paper reports the growth of ZnO nanowires on a vertically aligned CNT forest and studies the sensing properties of the fabricated samples to organic vapors at different temperatures. It is found that the gas response is enhanced at higher temperatures. Moreover, longer ZnO nanowires in CNT-ZnO samples exhibit higher sensitivity to analytes.

Effects of electrolyte variation on ammonia sensing temperature for BiVO4 sensing electrode in mixed potential gas sensor

Md Shoriful Islam et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate an electrochemical gas sensor based on BiVO4 sensing electrode for ammonia sensing, and to reduce the operating temperature of the sensor by applying different electrolytes. The results show that the sensor has good selectivity and stability for NH3, and the presence of GDC electrolyte reduces the response/recovery time.

Effect of Humidity on Gas Sensing Performance of Carbon Nanotube Gas Sensors Operated at Room Temperature

Mostafa Shooshtari et al.

Summary: The study found that an increase in humidity can reduce the electrical conductivity of CNT gas sensors by around 4%, but for humidity above 80%, the conductivity slightly increases. Additionally, the response of the sensors to volatile organic compounds decreases by 40% with a change in humidity up to 80%.

Effect of temperature and humidity on the sensing performance of TiO2 nanowire-based ethanol vapor sensors

Mostafa Shooshtari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of temperature and humidity on gas sensors based on titanium dioxide nanowires, finding the optimal operating temperature to be around 180 degrees Celsius. Different nanowire morphologies have their own optimal operating temperatures. Additionally, the resistance of sensors increases at higher relative humidity, while the response to ethanol vapor gradually increases from 10% to 60% RH but decreases from 60% to 90% RH.

Enhanced selectivity of microfluidic gas sensors by modifying microchannel geometry and surface chemistry with graphene quantum dots

Mahan Ghazi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an improved selectivity of microfluidic gas sensors towards volatile organic compounds by increasing the effect of adsorption of analytes on the surface of the sensor's microchannel. Modification of microchannel geometry and surface with graphene quantum dots significantly enhances the sensor's selectivity.
