Seismic reliability analysis using a multi-fidelity surrogate model: Example of base-isolated buildings

Konstantinos Skandalos et al.

Summary: This paper presents an approach for conducting simulation-based seismic reliability analysis using a multi-fidelity surrogate model. By fusing a large number of low-fidelity model evaluations with a few high-fidelity model evaluations using Cokriging, high-fidelity model accuracy can be achieved while mitigating computational cost. The relative error in failure probability prediction of Cokriging is shown to be in the range of 6% with a maximum of 10%, compared to errors as high as 60% provided by the low-fidelity model.

Coupled Flow/Geomechanics Modeling of Interfracture Water Injection To Enhance Oil Recovery in Tight Reservoirs

Yongzan Liu et al.

Summary: Unconventional tight reservoirs with low permeability and low porosity have been challenging to develop, but techniques such as hydraulic fracturing and water injection can improve hydrocarbon recovery. This study analyzes the feasibility and efficiency of interfracture water injection in enhancing oil recovery in tight oil reservoirs through a coupled flow/geomechanics model. Results show that interfracture water injection can be a promising EOR technique for tight oil reservoirs.

Pore-Scale Perspective of Gas/Water Two-Phase Flow in Shale

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: Transport behaviors of single-phase gas and single-phase water at the nanoscale deviate from the predictions of continuum flow theory, especially when both gases and liquids flow simultaneously in pores or networks of pores. A pseudopotential-based lattice Boltzmann method was developed to simulate gas/water two-phase flow at the pore scale, incorporating fluid/fluid and fluid/solid interactions to capture microscopic interactions among phases. The study demonstrated the successful application of the proposed method in modeling gas/water two-phase flow in systems like single nanopores, parallel nanopores, and nanoporous media.

Optimization of Fracturing Parameters by Modified Variable-Length Particle-Swarm Optimization in Shale-Gas Reservoir

Jun Yao et al.

Summary: Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are efficient techniques for enhancing recovery in shale-gas reservoirs. An improved algorithm called modified variable-length PSO was proposed to automatically select the optimal fracturing parameters. The results showed that the modified algorithm outperformed the traditional algorithm in terms of convergence speed and accuracy, providing a new perspective for fracturing parameter optimization.

Optimising well orientation in hydraulic fracturing of naturally fractured shale gas formations

Joseph Sherratt et al.

Summary: This study used the FUM method to investigate the impact of natural fractures on production from hydraulically fractured wells and proposed a novel idea of changing well orientation to optimize recovery. The results showed that changing well orientation can significantly enhance the complementary effect of natural fractures on hydraulic fractures and reduce the development cost of shale reservoirs.

Complex fracture network simulation and optimization in naturally fractured shale reservoir based on modified neural network algorithm

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: A comprehensive numerical investigation is proposed for optimizing Complex Fracture Networks (CFN) in fractured shale reservoirs, taking into account geomechanics and economic factors. The study utilizes an HF propagation model coupled with a power-law probability NF pattern, as well as an EDFM simulation to predict CFN productivity. Results show that optimizing CFN placements can improve economic revenue and gas production significantly.

Wettability effects on phase behavior and interfacial tension in shale nanopores

Dong Feng et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of nanoconfinement effects on hydrocarbons in nanopores, finding that wettability influences the critical properties' shift and curvature-dependent effects. Results show that nanoconfinement effects are dependent on both pore size and wettability.

A Novel Surrogate-Assisted Multi-objective Optimization Method for Well Control Parameters Based on Tri-Training

Lian Wang et al.

Summary: The study introduces a semi-supervised learning method called tri-training surrogate-assisted multi-objective optimization (MOO-TTSA) to strike a balance between reducing computational burden and enhancing accuracy of a surrogate model. By updating the surrogate model each generation to improve accuracy and lessen computational burden, the method reduces the number of simulation runs. The MOO-TTSA method proves to be more efficient, superior, and converges faster compared to other conventional optimization models.
