Reconstructing the graviton

Alfio Bonanno et al.

Summary: We reconstruct the Lorentzian graviton propagator in asymptotically safe quantum gravity from Euclidean data. The positive spectral function of the dynamical graviton suggests the unitarity of asymptotically safe quantum gravity, while the negative parts in the spectral function of the background graviton are similar to the gluon spectral function.

Causality Constraints on Gravitational Effective Field Theories

Claudia de Rham et al.

Summary: In this article, we investigate the effective field theory of gravity around black holes and find that the coefficients of the dimension-8 operators are tightly constrained by causality considerations. These constraints are more stringent than previously derived causality and positivity bounds, suggesting that the effects of a single dimension-8 operator cannot be observed while maintaining causality. We also identify the regime where the generic dimension-8 and lower order operators can potentially be observable while preserving causality.

Pregeometry and spontaneous time-space asymmetry

C. Wetterich

Summary: This paper investigates the emergence of metrics in pregeometry and proposes a model where the distinction between time and space arises from the dynamics. By formulating the model as a Yang-Mills theory with fermions and vector fields, geometry and general relativity emerge at large distances due to spontaneous symmetry breaking. The paper suggests that this type of model may behave consistently and well in the short distance limit.

On the reconstruction problem in quantum gravity

Mathijs Fraaije et al.

Summary: Path integrals and the Wilsonian renormalization group are two computational tools used to investigate continuum approaches to quantum gravity, with their starting points being a bare action and a fixed point of the renormalization group flow, respectively. This work demonstrates that the mapping between these two formulations does not generate non-localities at quadratic order in the background curvature.

The nonperturbative functional renormalization group and its applications

N. Dupuis et al.

Summary: The renormalization group is crucial in physics for determining the low-energy properties of systems and searching for ultraviolet completions. The nonperturbative functional renormalization group (FRG) method is a modern implementation of Wilson's RG, providing a framework to study models with correlated degrees of freedom over long distances. It is based on an exact functional flow equation and has applications in various fields of physics.

Pregeometry and euclidean quantum gravity

Christof Wetterich

Summary: Einstein's general relativity can emerge from pregeometry, which is formulated as a SO(4) - Yang-Mills theory in euclidean pregeometry. The well-behaved propagators of all fields at short distances and absence of ghost or tachyonic poles in the graviton propagator make this pregeometry a valid candidate for euclidean quantum gravity, with no obstructions for analytic continuation to a Minkowski signature of the metric.

Fundamental scale invariance

Summary: Fundamental scale invariance is proposed as a new theoretical principle beyond renormalizability, providing highly predictive theories that are compatible with realistic particle physics and quantum gravity. Non-linear restrictions for scaling solutions can explain properties like an asymptotically vanishing cosmological constant.

Quantum Gravity: A Fluctuating Point of View

Jan M. Pawlowski et al.

Summary: This contribution discusses the asymptotic safety scenario for quantum gravity with a functional renormalization group approach, reviewing the state of the art in pure gravity and general gravity-matter systems. It covers topics such as the existence and properties of the asymptotically safe ultraviolet fixed point, full ultraviolet-infrared trajectories with classical gravity in the infrared, and the curvature dependence of couplings in gravity-matter systems. The results also touch upon the ultraviolet stability of the fixed point and the dominance of gravity fluctuations in minimally coupled gravity-matter systems, as well as important physics properties such as locality of the theory, diffeomorphism invariance, background independence, unitarity, and access to observables, while outlining open challenges.

Causality and gravity

John F. Donoghue et al.

Summary: It is shown that uncertainty in the causal structure of field theory is inevitable when quantum gravity is involved, including the ill-definition of lightcones. This uncertainty is small in the effective field theory regime but grows with energy, representing an unknown factor for a generic UV completion. The mechanisms uncovered in effective field theory and quadratic gravity could be common features of quantum gravity.

Asymptotic Safety: Swampland or Wonderland?

Ivano Basile et al.

Summary: The consequences of combining swampland conjectures with the requirement of asymptotic safety were investigated, exploring the infrared regime of asymptotically safe gravity and identifying the allowed values of higher-derivative couplings and standard logarithmic form factors. The results suggest a non-trivial interplay between the conditions stemming from ultraviolet completeness, black hole physics, and cosmology.

Positivity bounds on dark energy: when matter matters

Claudia de Rham et al.

Summary: Positivity bounds have been used to constrain scalar-tensor theories of dark energy, but coupling to matter fields has played a limited role. Demanding positivity when including interactions with standard matter fields leads to further constraints on the dark energy parameter space. Implementing these bounds as theoretical priors affects cosmological parameter constraints and shows that gravitational waves must travel superluminally on cosmological backgrounds in a standard UV completion.

Cosmological α′-corrections from the functional renormalization group

Ivano Basile et al.

Summary: In this study, the Functional Renormalization Group techniques were applied in string theory to derive an effective mini-superspace action for cosmological backgrounds in terms of the string scale alpha '. T-duality played a crucial role in classifying perturbative curvature corrections, leading to renormalization group equations with exact solutions in any spacetime dimension D. While an analytic solution with a non-Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point was found around D = 2, no analogous solution was found in D = 4 using polynomial truncations. The study also discussed potential cosmological implications of the findings.

Essential Quantum Einstein Gravity

Alessio Baldazzi et al.

This suggests that quantum Einstein gravity may have no free parameters in the absence of matter and predicts a vanishing cosmological constant.

Non-Perturbative Propagators in Quantum Gravity

Benjamin Knorr et al.

Summary: Non-perturbative renormalisation group methods were employed to compute the momentum dependence of propagators in quantum gravity in general dimensions, revealing qualitative differences in the propagators of different graviton and Faddeev-Popov ghost modes. This allowed for the reconstruction of form factors quadratic in curvature from first principles, with results showing qualitative stability under variations of the gauge fixing choice.

String tension between de Sitter vacua and curvature corrections

Ivano Basile et al.

Summary: By utilizing the functional renormalization group and constraints of T-duality, we have derived cosmological effective actions to all orders in alpha', avoiding truncations of the theory space. Our findings show that higher-derivative alpha' corrections prohibit the existence of de Sitter vacua, supporting the no-de Sitter swampland conjecture in the presence of all-order effects in alpha'.

The derivative expansion in asymptotically safe quantum gravity: general setup and quartic order

Benjamin Knorr

Summary: A general framework for systematically studying the derivative expansion of asymptotically safe quantum gravity has been proposed, based on an exact decoupling and cancellation of different modes in the Landau limit. It is applicable independent of the truncation order, and the power of the framework is illustrated by discussing the quartic order of the derivative expansion and its fixed point structure as well as physical implications.

Reconstructing confined particles with complex singularities

Yui Hayashi et al.

Summary: Complex singularities have been found in propagators of confined particles, and Minkowski propagators are rigorously reconstructed from Euclidean propagators with complex singularities. The analytically continued Wightman function remains holomorphic in the tube, maintaining Lorentz symmetry and locality, while the reconstructed Wightman function violates temperedness and positivity conditions. Additionally, it is argued that complex singularities correspond to confined zero-norm states in an indefinite metric state space.

Exploring new corners of asymptotically safe unimodular quantum gravity

Gustavo P. de Brito et al.

Summary: The renormalization group flow of unimodular quantum gravity was studied with different truncations of the effective action, searching for nontrivial fixed-point solutions for polynomial expansions. The system included beta functions for gravitational couplings, anomalous dimensions of graviton and ghosts, and investigated the impact of different endomorphism parameter choices on fixed-point structure. Evidence for nontrivial fixed points was found, with the f(R) truncation showing better convergence properties, and compatibility with the Standard Model and its extensions was explored when matter fields were included.
