Selenium desorption in tropical soils by sulfate and phosphate, and selenium biofortification of Mombaca grass under increasing rates of phosphate fertilisation

Maria Jessica Vieira dos Santos et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the adsorption of selenate and selenite in two oxidic soils with different soil textures, as well as the competitive effects of phosphate and sulfate on selenium desorption. It was found that selenium adsorption varied depending on speciation, rate, and soil texture, with selenite showing greater adsorption than selenate. In the biofortification experiment with Panicum maximum cv. Mombaca, it was observed that increasing phosphate fertilization rates led to higher selenium content in the plant shoots.

Distribution and speciation of selenium in soybean proteins and its effect on protein structure and functionality

Xiaofang Deng et al.

Summary: The study found that treating soybean seeds with selenate can increase selenium concentration and recovery efficiency, with selenium primarily existing in the form of selenomethionine. In selenium-enriched soybeans, SPI and 11S show a higher ability to enrich selenium effectively.

Enhancing selenium and key flavor compounds contents in soy sauce using selenium-enriched soybean

Xianli Gao et al.

Summary: Selenium-enriched soybean used to make selenium-enriched soy sauce significantly increased the selenium content, organic selenium content, small peptides and free amino acids content in the soy sauce, as well as enhanced the aroma-active compounds. The selenium-enriched soybean also promoted the reproduction of aroma-producing bacteria and yeast, leading to more aroma compounds in the soy sauce.

Selenium application influenced selenium biofortification and physiological traits in water-deficit common bean plants

Ruby Antonieta Vega Ravello et al.

Summary: This study showed that agronomic biofortification with selenium can enhance the tolerance of common bean plants to water deficit conditions, with positive effects seen at lower rates of selenium application. The enrichment of common bean grains with selenium demonstrated improved plant defense systems and nutrient accumulation without compromising biomass production under water deficit stress.

Effects of sulfur application on selenium uptake and seed selenium speciation in soybean (Glycine max L.) grown in different soil types

Xiaofang Deng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of sulfur application on selenium uptake and seed selenium speciation in high-protein soybean grown in different soil types. The results showed that while sulfur application inhibited selenium uptake in soybean plants, it did not influence seed selenium speciation and selenomethionine was the major selenium species.

Effect of soil properties on time-dependent fixation (ageing) of selenate

Chandnee Ramkissoon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the bioavailability of exogenous selenium in soil decreases over time, especially in calcareous soils. The selenium concentration in wheat plants also decreases with soil aging, with the lowest concentrations observed in calcareous soils. The findings can provide valuable insights for optimizing selenium fertilizer application in biofortification programs.
