Understory biomass measurement in a dense plantation forest based on drone-SfM data by a manual low-flying drone under the canopy

Yupan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, we successfully reconstructed the understory vegetation using Structure from Motion and ultralow-flying drone technology in a densely planted forest. We generated understory vegetation biomass distribution models, which are important for evaluating erosion and evapotranspiration in dense plantation forests and future environmental management.

Point cloud registration method for maize plants based on conical surface fitting-ICP

Kai'xing Zhang et al.

Summary: A point cloud registration method for maize plants based on conical surface fitting-iterative closest point (ICP) was proposed in this study. The method combines with an automatic point cloud collection platform for data collection. Experimental results show that the method can accurately register and reconstruct the three-dimensional point cloud model of maize plants.

Lidar sheds new light on plant phenomics for plant breeding and management: Recent advances and future prospects

Shichao Jin et al.

Summary: Plant phenomics is a new field that connects plant genomics and environmental studies, improving plant breeding and management. Remote sensing techniques have enhanced high-throughput plant phenotyping, but challenges remain in the accuracy and efficiency of 3D phenotyping. Lidar technology provides a powerful tool for 3D phenotyping in agriculture, leading to advancements in plant modeling and insights into breeding and management.

Genetic gains in maize yield and related traits for high-yielding cultivars released during 1980s to 2010s in China

Guangzhou Liu et al.

Summary: The study examined the genetic improvement impact on maize grain yield and related traits from the 1980s to 2010s, showing that breeding in optimal environments significantly contributed to the increased yield potential. Key factors involved in the genetic contribution included variations in leaf angle above ear, ear ratio, leaf area duration (LAD), photosynthetic capacity, biomass accumulation, and harvest index. The analysis revealed that genetic improvements focused primarily on optimizing specific phenotypic traits and physiological characteristics during the breeding of maize cultivars between the two decades.

Canopy occupation volume as an indicator of canopy photosynthetic capacity

Fusang Liu et al.

Summary: An effective method based on 3D point clouds data was developed in this study to accurately segment plant organs for simulating the synergistic effect of leaf area and leaf angle on canopy photosynthesis. The new parameter, canopy occupation volume (COV), was found to better explain variations in canopy photosynthetic capacity, making it useful for evaluating canopy architecture in breeding and agronomic research.
