A genetic module at one locus in rice protects chloroplasts to enhance thermotolerance

Hai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study identified two genes, TT3.1 and TT3.2, that enhance rice thermotolerance by facilitating the communication between the plasma membrane and chloroplasts. They found that upon heat stress, TT3.1 translocates to endosomes where it ubiquitinates TT3.2 for degradation, implying its role as a potential thermosensor. The accumulation of mature TT3.2 proteins in chloroplasts is crucial for protecting thylakoids from heat stress.

ALBA proteins confer thermotolerance through stabilizing HSF messenger RNAs in cytoplasmic granules

Jinjin Tong et al.

Summary: This study reveals a new regulatory mechanism in Arabidopsis by which ALBA proteins stabilize HSFs in cytoplasmic granules under heat stress. The alba456 triple mutants display pleiotropic developmental defects and hypersensitivity to heat stress.

TT2 controls rice thermotolerance through SCT1-dependent alteration of wax biosynthesis

Yi Kan et al.

Summary: The study identified the role of the TT2 gene in thermotolerance in rice, as well as the process of decoding Ca2+ signals under heat stress through SCT1-CaM interaction. It also demonstrated the role of G proteins in mediating plant responses to abiotic stresses.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress pathway mediates the early heat stress response of developing rice seeds

Jaspreet Sandhu et al.

Summary: This study found that young rice seeds are most sensitive to heat stress during the first two days after flowering, with Inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1)-mediated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response and jasmonic acid (JA) pathways playing key roles in the early heat stress response. Increased JA levels under heat stress may precede the ER stress response, which can impact both grain size and quality.
