Heterotrophic cultivation of Galdieria sulphuraria under non-sterile conditions in digestate and hydrolyzed straw

Daniel Pleissner et al.

Summary: The study explores the non-sterile heterotrophic cultivation of Galdieria sulphuraria in the presence of digestate and straw hydrolysate. Results indicate that proteolytic treatment of digestate can enhance growth rates and cell concentrations of G. sulphuraria, and the algae can utilize glucose obtained after straw hydrolysis. This research may offer promising strategies for utilizing agricultural waste streams to produce algal biomass rich in proteins.

Removal of sugars in wastewater from food production through heterotrophic growth of Galdieria sulphuraria

Philipp Scherhag et al.

Summary: The study investigated the sugar removal efficiency of the unicellular extremophilic red alga Galdieria sulphuraria on wastewater from fruit-salad production. Results showed that G. sulphuraria strain SAG 21.92 was able to significantly reduce high sugar concentrations in wastewater streams, with potential applications in producing valuable nutraceuticals like phycocyanin.

Advantages of Heterotrophic Microalgae as a Host for Phytochemicals Production

Surumpa Jareonsin et al.

Summary: Currently, most commercial recombinant technologies rely on host systems, each with its own benefits and drawbacks depending on the target products. Prokaryote hosts lack key mechanisms for producing eukaryotic products like phytochemicals, while other eukaryote hosts have limitations such as low yield and high cost. Using heterotrophic microalgae as a host system may offer a solution to these challenges and could be a promising direction for high-value phytochemicals production in the future.

Techno-economic and life-cycle assessment of fuel production from mixotrophic Galdieria sulphuraria microalgae on hydrolysate

Michael D. Somers et al.

Summary: This study evaluated corn stover-derived cellulosic sugars as the mixotrophic organic carbon source for the cultivation of Galdieria sulphuraria, and the minimum biomass selling price was found to be $2869 per dry metric ton in the glass helical photobioreactor design and $921 per dry metric ton in the covered pond design. The minimum fuel selling price after downstream processing was $8.24 and $3.32 dm(3) GE(-1) for the photobioreactor and covered pond systems, respectively. Life-cycle assessment results showed a global warming potential of 339 and 9.1 gCO(2) -eq. MJ(-1) and a net energy ratio of 2.21 and 0.25 MJ MJ(-1) for the photobioreactor and covered pond systems, respectively.

Physiological and transcriptome analysis elucidates the metabolic mechanism of versatile Porphyridium purpureum under nitrogen deprivation for exopolysaccharides accumulation

Liang Ji et al.

Summary: Porphyridium purpureum is a mesophilic, unicellular red alga rich in phycoerythrin, sulfate polysaccharides, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Nitrogen deficiency inhibits its growth, resulting in cell yellowing and thickening of the extracellular viscous sheath. This study shows that under nitrogen stress, P. purpureum increases the content of total lipids and exopolysaccharides.
