Non-targeted metabolomic profiling of filamentous cyanobacteria Aphanizomenon flos-aquae exposed to a concentrated culture filtrate of Microcystis aeruginosa

Hu Jin et al.

Summary: The study found a potential allelopathic effect between Microcystis and Aphanizomenon, where one species may inhibit the growth of the other. Metabolomic profiling revealed changes in metabolites related to apoptosis, growth inhibition, and stress response in the inhibited Aphanizomenon cells exposed to Microcystis. This sheds light on the interaction between bloom forming cyanobacterial species sharing the same ecological environment.

Insight into the adhesion propensities of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on the abiotic surface using XDLVO theory

Cheng-cheng Ji et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adhesion behaviors of sEPS and bEPS from Chlorella vulgaris on different surfaces. It was found that bEPS exhibited higher adhesion propensity than sEPS, especially on PTFE surface. According to the XDLVO theory, the Lewis acid-base interfacial free energy of algal EPS played a key role in determining adhesion behavior, while DOC was shown to be a more suitable index for describing EPS adhesion.
