Changes in Rumen Bacterial Community Induced by the Dietary Physically Effective Neutral Detergent Fiber Levels in Goat Diets

Benchu Xue et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary physically effective neutral detergent fiber (peNDF) on the growth performance and rumen bacterial communities in goats. The results showed that an optimal peNDF level between 26.5% and 28.1% improved goat growth performance, rumen development, and influenced the composition of rumen bacterial communities.

Effect of divergence in residual methane emissions on feed intake and efficiency, growth and carcass performance, and indices of rumen fermentation and methane emissions in finishing beef cattle

Paul E. Smith et al.

Summary: Residual expressions of enteric emissions were found to be a more equitable index for identifying an animal's methanogenic potential, compared to traditional measures. Ranking animals based on residual methane emissions (RME) can lead to a better understanding of methane production potential and its relationship with animal productivity.

The Effect of a High-Grain Diet on the Rumen Microbiome of Goats with a Special Focus on Anaerobic Fungi

Katerina O. Fliegerova et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in rumen microbiome of goats switched from forage to concentrate diet, with a focus on anaerobic fungi. The results showed significant alterations in microbial communities, especially in anaerobic fungi, suggesting that the rumen ecosystem acts as a source for novel microorganisms and unexplored microbial interactions. Additionally, the initial rumen microbiota of the host animal significantly influences the reaction pattern upon diet change.

Physically effective neutral detergent fiber improves chewing activity, rumen fermentation, plasma metabolites, and milk production in lactating dairy cows fed a high-concentrate diet

Yangchun Cao et al.

Summary: Increasing the concentration of physically effective neutral detergent fiber (peNDF) in diets can reduce the risk of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) in dairy cows. High peNDF(8.0) diet decreased the number of meals per day, increased chewing and ruminating times, and improved rumen fluid pH and fermentation characteristics.

Whole corn grain-based diet and levels of physically effective neutral detergent fiber from forage (pefNDF) for feedlot lambs: Digestibility, ruminal fermentation, nitrogen balance and ruminal pH

Matheus Sousa de Paula Carlis et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing levels of physically effective neutral detergent fiber in a whole corn grain-based diet can decrease the digestibility of nutrients without positively impacting dry matter intake, nitrogen balance, or ruminal fermentation. Additionally, adding physically effective neutral detergent fiber to whole corn diets did not provide any benefits in terms of nutrient digestibility, ruminal fermentation, or nitrogen balance.

The structure and functional profile of ruminal microbiota in young and adult reindeers (Rangifer tarandus) consuming natural winter-spring and summer-autumn seasonal diets

Elena Yildirim et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in the nutritional value of diets for reindeer during the winter-spring and summer-autumn seasons, as well as distinct metabolic pathways in the rumen microbiota during these seasons. Seasonal changes had a more significant impact on minor microbial communities, while age-related changes were less pronounced.

No hints at glyphosate-induced ruminal dysbiosis in cows

Fabian Billenkamp et al.

Summary: Glyphosate-based herbicides are widely used non-selective herbicides that inhibit synthesis of aromatic amino acids in various organisms. Controversies have arisen regarding potential health effects, especially on gut microbiomes. However, a study analyzing glyphosate effects on the rumen microbiome did not observe any adverse effects on composition, diversity, or microbial metabolites, despite using feedstuffs with differing dietary fiber and energy content.
