Metagenomic and metabolic analyses of poly-extreme microbiome from an active crater volcano lake

Betsy Anaid Pena-Ocana et al.

Summary: This study characterized the microbiome of the crater lake of the El Chichón volcano in Mexico, revealing taxonomic and functional diversity of representative Archaea and Bacteria phyla. Metabolic interactions between prokaryotes in this multi-extreme environment were identified, contributing to the understanding of microbial metabolism under extreme conditions. This research provides potential knowledge that can be applied to biotechnological processes and evolutionary studies.

Valid publication of the names of forty- two phyla of prokaryotes

Aharon Oren et al.

Summary: After the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes (ICSP) voted to include the rank of phylum in the rules of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP) and published the decision in the IJSEM, names and formal descriptions of 42 phyla were presented for valid publication, based on genera as the nomenclatural types.

Presence of Fe(II) and nitrate shapes aquifer-originating communities leading to an autotrophic enrichment dominated by an Fe(II)-oxidizing Gallionellaceae sp.

Natalia Jakus et al.

Summary: The presence of Fe(II) promotes the growth of denitrifying Burfeholderiaceae spp. and an unclassified Gallionellaceae sp., with the latter showing the potential to oxidize Fe(II), fix CO2, and perform denitrification. Novel putative NRFeOx taxa, including Curvibacter spp., Methyloversatilis sp., and Thermomonas spp., were also identified.
