Identifying large- scale recombination and capsular switching events in Streptococcus agalactiae strains causing disease in adults in the UK between 2014 and 2015

Uzma Basit Khan et al.

Summary: The number of invasive group B streptococcal infections in the adult UK population has been increasing steadily in recent years, with the most common serotypes being V, III, and Ia. In-depth analysis of the whole-genome sequences of clinically important GBS isolates revealed associations between specific serotypes and virulence genes, as well as multiple recombination events mediating potential capsular switching events. These findings highlight the importance of routine surveillance and contribute to future GBS vaccine research.

CC17 group B Streptococcus exploits integrins for neonatal meningitis development

Romain Deshayes de Cambronne et al.

Summary: CC17-GBS utilizes integrins to cross brain vessels, leading to meningitis, with hosts being more susceptible during infancy. Blocking these integrins reduces the ability of CC17-GBS to invade the central nervous system.

Summary: This study investigated infant GBS infections in Iceland from 1975 to 2019 and found that CC17 is a major cause of GBS infection in infants in Iceland, with this clone significantly associated with late-onset disease (LOD).

Mortality, neurodevelopmental impairments, and economic outcomes after invasive group B streptococcal disease in early infancy in Denmark and the Netherlands: a national matched cohort study

Erzsebet Horvath-Puho et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term effects of infant invasive Group B Streptococcus (GBS) disease on mortality, neurodevelopmental impairments, and economic outcomes up to adolescence in Denmark and the Netherlands. The findings showed that meningitis was associated with increased mortality at age 5, any iGBS disease increased the risk of NDI at age 10, and children with a history of iGBS disease required more frequent outpatient clinic visits and hospital admissions by age 5.
