Immune priming with Candida albicans induces a shift in cellular immunity and gene expression of Musca domestica

Zhongxun Li et al.

Summary: Immune priming against Candida albicans was observed in housefly larvae, leading to increased survival rate, higher hemocyte density, and altered gene expression, particularly genes related to the Toll signaling pathway.

Dscam in arthropod immune priming: What is known and what remains unknown

Weiwei Li

Summary: The prevailing view in the academic circle is that invertebrates lack adaptive immunity, but the immune memory and specificity of invertebrates challenge this notion and suggest immune priming based on innate immunity. Research on the Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule (Dscam) gene in invertebrates shows its unique role in immune priming, yet its high molecular diversity and existing research gaps present challenges in understanding its regulation of immune priming. Despite significant studies on Dscam-regulated immune functions in insects and crustaceans, important unresolved questions remain, which may improve the understanding of Dscam-regulated immune priming in invertebrates.

Current understanding of immune priming phenomena in insects

Michal Sulek et al.

Summary: Insect immunity is a complex and interesting field, with recent discoveries shedding light on the adaptive abilities of insects and their immune system plasticity. Immune priming, a phenomenon where insects increase their resistance after encountering pathogens, can occur within individuals or across generations, highlighting the role of parental infection in offspring resistance. Further research is needed to understand the molecular mechanisms and regulatory factors underlying immune priming in insects.

Proteomic profiling of bacterial and fungal induced immune priming in Galleria mellonella larvae

Gerard Sheehan et al.

Summary: Some insects show immunological priming, with heightened humoral and cellular responses leading to enhanced survival against subsequent infection. Pre-exposure to heat-killed Staphylococcus aureus increased resistance to both bacterial and fungal infection in Galleria mellonella larvae, while pre-exposure to heat-killed Candida albicans cells only enhanced resistance to fungal infection.

Trained Immunity in Anopheles gambiae: Antibacterial Immunity Is Enhanced by Priming via Sugar Meal Supplemented With a Single Gut Symbiotic Bacterial Strain

Aditi Kulkarni et al.

Summary: Mosquitoes have developed an effective innate immune system through interactions with gut microbes, with resident bacteria serving a crucial role in priming basal immunity. Priming mosquitoes with specific bacteria enhances antibacterial immunity and confers protection with a certain degree of specificity. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that priming with bacteria triggers a coordinated systemic regulation that results in enhanced immunity against subsequent challenges, with the involvement of not only typical immune pathways but also lysosome and metabolism.
