Endophytic fungi: a tool for plant growth promotion and sustainable agriculture

Everlon Cid Rigobelo et al.

Summary: Endophytic fungi colonize plant tissues without causing disease symptoms, benefiting both the host plant and themselves. They have been found to provide direct benefits through nutrient acquisition and phytohormone production, as well as indirect benefits such as inducing resistance, producing antibiotics and secondary metabolites, producing siderophores, and protecting against abiotic and biotic stresses. The mechanisms of these interactions are discussed in depth.

Correlations Between the Metabolome and the Endophytic Fungal Metagenome Suggests Importance of Various Metabolite Classes in Community Assembly in Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana, Brassicaceae) Roots

Tamas Plaszko et al.

Summary: The plant microbiome is an important field of research that has implications in agriculture, plant health, and production of bioactive natural products. This study explores the correlations between fungal endophytic communities and plant chemistry, demonstrating the significance of these interactions. By analyzing the chemical characteristics and fungal community of horseradish roots, the researchers found that changes in the plant metabolome were correlated with the abundance of certain fungal strains.

Fungal endophytes of Brassicaceae: Molecular interactions and crop benefits

Jorge Poveda et al.

Summary: The Brassicaceae family is characterized by the synthesis and accumulation of glucosinolates (GSLs), sulfur-containing compounds that play a crucial role in plant defense. Although they cannot establish optimal associations with mycorrhizal hosts, they can form beneficial interactions with endophytic fungi, resulting in various benefits such as growth promotion, increased yield and quality, enhanced tolerance to stress, and pest and disease control. The Brassicaceae family is a rich source of novel beneficial endophytes with potential applications in agriculture.

Effect of volatile and non-volatile metabolites from Leptosphaeria maculans on tomato calli under abiotic stresses

Jorge Poveda

Summary: This study presents a novel methodology for studying the effects of fungal metabolites on plant calli under abiotic stresses, using Leptosphaeria maculans, tomato calli, and drought and salinity stresses. The study found that the application of metabolites from L. maculans can increase the growth and vitality of tomato calli under salinity and drought conditions. Gene expression analysis showed that the expression of related genes was induced. The ability of L. maculans metabolites to increase plant tolerance to abiotic stresses may be related to their ability to induce antioxidant enzyme activity or accumulation of antioxidant compounds, and their ability to increase the expression of ABA-dependent response genes.

Glucosinolates in Brassica Vegetables: Characterization and Factors That Influence Distribution, Content, and Intake

Xianli Wu et al.

Summary: GSLs are sulfur-containing compounds found in the Brassica genus; Brassica vegetables are among the most commonly consumed vegetables in the world. Evidence suggests an inverse association between the consumption of Brassica vegetables and the risk of various types of cancer; the biological activities of Brassica vegetables are largely attributed to the hydrolytic products of GSLs.

Summary: High and low IM content kale populations were grown and analyzed in different environments, with the high IM population showing better agronomic parameters, GSL accumulation, and metabolite concentration. This indicates that high IM kale populations may be more tolerant to diverse environmental conditions due to their GSLs and associated metabolites with potential antioxidant properties.
