Dual contribution of the gut microbiome to immunotherapy efficacy and toxicity: supportive care implications and recommendations

Hannah R. Wardill et al.

Summary: The composition of the gut microbiome is increasingly recognized to be linked to the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors. However, efforts to enhance immunotherapy efficacy must also consider the risk of immune-related adverse events. Strategies at various research phases are needed to ensure the impact of augmenting immunotherapy efficacy is approached in a manner that considers adverse implications.

Serrated neoplasia in the colorectum: gut microbiota and molecular pathways

Xing Kang et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a heterogeneous disease with different gene expression patterns, characterized by two major colorectal carcinogenesis pathways: conventional adenoma-carcinoma pathway and alternative serrated neoplasia pathway. Although serrated lesions have malignant potential and unique characteristics, they are often overlooked due to their anatomical location and histological features. Environmental factors, especially the gut microbial composition, play a crucial role in CRC pathogenesis, with potential interactions between microbiota composition and host genetic perturbations in the development of serrated lesions.

Antibiotic-Related Changes in Microbiome: The Hidden Villain behind Colorectal Carcinoma Immunotherapy Failure

Tsvetelina Velikova et al.

Summary: The interaction between drugs and microbiota is critical for successful treatment, especially in cancer treatment, particularly immunotherapy. Research suggests that altering intestinal bacteria can reverse immunotherapy tolerance in cancer. However, more studies are needed to evaluate the impact of antibiotic-induced changes in gut microbiota on colorectal cancer treatment.
