Mini-review: The Role of the Cerebellum in Visuomotor Adaptation

Elinor Tzvi et al.

Summary: This review summarizes recent findings on visuomotor adaptation, focusing on the central role played by the cerebellum and its interactions with cortical structures. Evidence is provided through behavioral studies in cerebellar patients, structural and functional imaging studies, and transcranial stimulation approaches, linking cerebellar activity to visuomotor adaptation processes beyond just correlation.

Cerebellar Dysfunction, Cerebro-cerebellar Connectivity and Autism Spectrum Disorders

Li -Da Su et al.

Summary: The cerebellum is not only involved in motor learning and coordination, but also plays a role in cognition and emotion behaviors. It is recognized as a key brain region affected in autism spectrum disorder. Future studies need to investigate the role of cerebellar dysfunction, cerebro-cerebellar connectivity, and ASD.

Multiple Motor Learning Processes in Humans: Defining Their Neurophysiological Bases

Danny Spampinato et al.

Summary: Learning new motor behaviors involves multiple distinct neural substrates, which can be understood through formation of internal models and positive reinforcement. Noninvasive brain stimulation techniques can provide insights into the underlying motor learning processes. Different physiological mechanisms contribute differently to recalibrating previously learned movements and acquiring new motor control policies, with contributions changing based on the time course of learning and type of behaviors being learned.

Did We Get Sensorimotor Adaptation Wrong? Implicit Adaptation as Direct Policy Updating Rather than Forward-Model-Based Learning

Alkis M. Hadjiosif et al.

Summary: The theory of motor system adaptation involves both forward-model-based learning and direct policy learning mechanisms, with experiments suggesting that the latter is more consistent with implicit adaptation under extreme perturbations. This challenges traditional beliefs about adaptation and suggests a new perspective on the process by which errors result in motor adaptation.

Aging Effect on Visuomotor Adaptation: Mediated by Cognitive Decline

Na Li et al.

Summary: This study found that older adults show a decline in visuomotor adaptation, which is not strongly correlated with chronological age increase but with the age-related declines of cognitive functions and speed of motor planning. The decline in cognitive resources mediated the effect of age increase on the decline in visuomotor adaptation, indicating that aging mainly reflects the age-related decline of cognitive functions, resulting in insufficient explicit processing on visual perturbation during visuomotor control.
