Dynamic functional connectivity in the static connectome of Caenorhabditis elegans

Steven W. Flavell et al.

Summary: Being able to flexibly respond to sensory cues is a hallmark of adaptive behavior. Recent studies on the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans have shown that the coupling of neurons can be dynamically regulated, allowing for the encoding of multiple behavioral states in a physically stereotyped connectome.

The emergence and influence of internal states

Steven W. Flavell et al.

Summary: Animal behavior is influenced by internal states, such as fear and hunger, which are generated by the nervous system. Recent research has shown that specific subsets of cells, changes in neural activity, and neuromodulation play important roles in the formation and updating of these internal states.

Hunger enhances food-odour attraction through a neuropeptide Y spotlight

Nao Horio et al.

Summary: This study reveals a neuronal mechanism by which hunger selectively enhances attraction to food odors over other olfactory cues. Specifically, activation of hypothalamic AGRP neurons promotes food odor preference, which is mediated by neuropeptide Y release in the thalamus.

Chemosensory signal transduction in Caenorhabditis elegans

Denise M. Ferkey et al.

Summary: Chemosensory neurons in C. elegans play a crucial role in responding to chemical cues, such as odorants, tastants, and pheromones. Studies have shown that the sensory mechanisms in C. elegans share remarkable homology with those in other organisms, and the development of new tools and technologies can provide further insights into the animal's detection and discrimination of chemical cues with a limited sensory neuron repertoire.

A neural circuit for flexible control of persistent behavioral states

Ni Ji et al.

Summary: The neural circuit controlling the choice between roaming and dwelling states in C. elegans shows stereotyped changes in circuit activity corresponding to each behavioral state. Mutual inhibition between two antagonistic neuromodulatory systems underlies the persistence and mutual exclusivity of neural activity patterns observed in each state, enabling flexible, sensory-driven control of persistent behavioral states.

Molecular topography of an entire nervous system

Seth R. Taylor et al.

Summary: The gene expression profiles of 302 neurons in the C. elegans nervous system show that individual neuron classes can be identified by the combinatorial expression of specific gene families, forming a complex and extensive signaling network. Computational approaches were used to identify cis-regulatory elements for neuron-specific gene expression and reveal adhesion proteins related to process placement and synaptic specificity. This neuron-specific gene expression directory is expected to drive investigations into the mechanisms that define anatomy, connectivity, and function in the C. elegans nervous system.

Connectomes across development reveal principles of brain maturation

Daniel Witvliet et al.

Summary: The study on isogenic Caenorhabditis elegans individuals' brain connectome reveals that while the overall geometry of the brain remains stable from birth to adulthood, there are substantial changes in chemical synaptic connectivity. Comparing connectomes between individuals shows significant differences, while comparing connectomes across maturation stages reveals consistent wiring changes between different neurons.

Sexual arousal gates visual processing during Drosophila courtship

Tom Hindmarsh Sten et al.

Summary: The internal arousal states of male fruit flies shape their sensory processing and behavior during courtship, with P1 neurons playing a key role in enhancing the sensitivity of visual projection neurons and guiding the male's pursuit of a female. Additionally, the activity of P1 neurons correlates with the male's pursuit intensity, continuously adjusting the visual signaling through the LC10a pathway to modulate courtship behavior.
