Uncovering a tripartite landmark in posterior cingulate cortex

Summary: Understanding the relationship between brain structure and function is crucial in neuroscience research. This study reveals that morphological differences in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) can predict individual differences in the macroanatomy, microstructure, and function of the PCC. By manually labeling brain sulci, researchers discovered a previously unknown shallow cortical indentation (referred to as the inframarginal sulcus; ifrms) within the PCC, which overlaps with a specific functional region associated with cognitive control. These findings highlight the importance of considering structural-functional coupling in the brain and raise questions about other potentially missed cortical indentations.
