Genetic variability of influenza A virus in pigs at weaning in Midwestern United States swine farms

Jayaveeramuthu Nirmala et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the genetic diversity of IAV in pigs at weaning in farms in the Midwestern USA. Multiple lineages of HA and NA were found to co-circulate in both piglets and farms, indicating significant genetic variability of IAV. The results underscore the need for novel strategies to prevent and control the spread of IAV within and between farms.

Effect of influenza A virus sow vaccination on infection in pigs at weaning: A prospective longitudinal study

Fabian O. Chamba Pardo et al.

Summary: The study found that sow vaccination can reduce IAV infections in pigs at weaning. Both prefarrow and whole herd vaccination protocols were effective in reducing the likelihood of IAV positive results at weaning.

Next-Generation Sequencing Analysis of the Within-Host Genetic Diversity of Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 Viruses in the Upper and Lower Respiratory Tracts of Patients with Severe Influenza

Ikuyo Takayama et al.

Summary: The study utilized next-generation sequencing to investigate the within-host genetic diversity of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus in respiratory samples from ICU patients. It found differences in amino acid substitutions between upper and lower respiratory tract samples, with the D222G/N substitution in the HA protein being a common mutation associated with severe disease in multiple patients.

Impact of nurse sows on influenza A virus transmission in pigs under field conditions

Jorge Garrido-Mantilla et al.

Summary: The study found that nurse sows play a significant role in maintaining influenza infections in piglets prior to weaning. The transmission of influenza A virus from nurse sows to adopted piglets is particularly important during the first week after adoption.

Co-circulation of multiple influenza A reassortants in swine harboring genes from seasonal human and swine influenza viruses

Pia Ryt-Hansen et al.

Summary: This paper presents the results of swIAV surveillance in Danish swine from 2011 to 2018, revealing multiple different circulating genotypes of the virus, including novel reassortants with human seasonal IAV gene segments. The phylogenetic analysis showed genetic drift in antigenic sites of the hemagglutinin protein and identified a swine divergent cluster among the viruses studied.
