White light emission and energy transfer processes in LaInO3 doped with Bi3+, Tb3+ and Eu3+

Xiaowu Hu et al.

Summary: A series of LaInO3 bulk materials doped with Bi3+, Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions have been synthesized and characterized. White light emission is achieved by altering the dopant concentration, and the energy transfer process is crucial for tuning the color of the emitted light.

Electronic Structure of Bi-Activated Luminescent Compounds and Pure Bismuth Photocatalytic Compounds

Pieter Dorenbos

Summary: The trends in electronic structure of Bi3+ and Bi2+ in wide bandgap inorganic compounds as luminescent dopants, as well as in pure Bi-compounds for photocatalytic splitting of water, were explored by determination of vacuum referred electron binding energies, with most of the needed data provided by spectroscopy, chemical shift model, and electrochemistry. The trends in VRBE of Bi3+ and Bi2+ ground state and excited state levels resemble that of Ce3+ and Eu2+ lanthanides.

Understanding the defect levels and photoluminescence in a series of bismuth-doped perovskite oxides: First-principles study

Bibo Lou et al.

Summary: First-principles calculations were used to study defect levels and photoluminescence in bismuth-doped perovskites. It was found that Bi3+ predominantly occupies the R site and the variation in trap levels is related to the host structure. The study provides insights into manipulating trap levels and emission wavelengths in Bi3+-doped perovskite oxides.

Fingerprints of optical absorption in the perovskite LaInO3: Insight from many-body theory and experiment

Wahib Aggoune et al.

Summary: A combined theoretical and experimental study was conducted on the electronic structure and optical absorption edge of the orthorhombic perovskite LaInO3. The study found the lowest-energy excitation below the fundamental gap, reflecting significant electron-hole attraction. Weak transitions around the valence band maximum were observed, with the first intense excitation appearing about 0.32 eV above. An experimental value obtained by ellipsometry coincided closely with the theoretical results, suggesting a good quantitative comparison between theory and experiment.

First-principles study of Bi3+-related luminescence and traps in the perovskites CaMO3 (M = Zr, Sn, Ti)

Bibo Lou et al.

Summary: The study used first-principles calculations to analyze the excitation, relaxation, and emission processes of Bi3+ activated materials, revealing significant differences in emission spectra due to the substitution of Bi3+ for Ca2+ in different coordination environments. Additionally, calculations provided insights into metastable excited states and Stokes shift for different materials, explaining the differences in measured emission spectra.
