Cooperative light-induced breathing of soft porous crystals via azobenzene buckling

Simon Krause et al.

Summary: The study explores the application of photoswitches as light-responsive triggers for phase transitions of porous materials. By incorporating an azobenzene photoswitch in the backbone of a metal-organic framework, the researchers achieve light-induced structural contraction and gas adsorption control in the porous network. The complex mechanism of light-gated breathing is established, revealing a novel light-induced deformation mechanism of constrained azobenzene photoswitches.

Synthesis and characterization of hexagonal Mg-Fe layered double hydroxide/grapheme oxide nanocomposite for efficient adsorptive removal of cadmium ion from aqueous solutions: Isotherm, kinetic, thermodynamic and mechanism

Katabathini Narasimharao et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution in water is a significant concern due to its bioaccumulation, non-biodegradability, and high toxicity. In this study, a Mg-Fe LDH/GO nanocomposite was synthesized and found to be efficient in removing Cd(II). The adsorption process was investigated, and the nanocomposite showed high potential for pollutant removal.

Reaping the benefits of open science in scholarly communication

Rosaria Ciriminna et al.

Summary: Despite efforts to promote open science, many scholars in the early 2020s do not self-archive their research articles or publish research papers as preprints, indicating a need for more education and training on open science practices.

Adaptive response of a metal-organic framework through reversible disorder-disorder transitions

S. Ehrling et al.

Summary: Porous metal-organic frameworks are excellent candidates for gas storage, separation, catalysis, and sensing due to their ultrahigh porosity and varied functionalities. Some frameworks have the ability to open their pores to specific guests and switch between two stability minima, enabling highly selective separation. A recent study showed a metal-organic framework based on nonlinear linkers can adopt a complex family of degenerate disordered configurations through guest exchange.

Open access publishing in chemistry: a practical perspective informing new education

Mario Pagliaro

Summary: Chemists were early adopters of open access publishing in the late 1990s, but adoption subsequently slowed down, resulting in chemistry having the lowest proportion of OA articles in articles published between 2009 and 2015. To benefit from open science, chemistry scholars need updated information and education relevant to open science.

Preprints in Chemistry: An Exploratory Analysis of Differences with Journal Articles

Mario Pagliaro

Summary: Although not statistically significant, the exploratory analysis of the differences between preprints and peer reviewed journal articles for ten studies first published on ChemRxiv and Preprints is still relevant for chemistry researchers and educators. The findings will inform new courses for young chemists, ultimately promoting accelerated innovation in the field.
