Use of Botanical Pesticides in Agriculture as an Alternative to Synthetic Pesticides

Patrick Maada Ngegba et al.

Summary: "Pest management is facing significant economic and environmental challenges worldwide due to excessive use of pesticides. Plant-based pesticides offer a sustainable and cost-effective alternative, with their effectiveness, availability, low toxicity, and rapid biodegradability. However, formulation difficulties and limited chemical data have hindered their global acceptance. This review aims to highlight the current usage, phytochemical compositions, insecticidal mechanisms, and challenges of plant-based pesticides in sustainable agricultural production."

Chemical composition and repellent effects of powders and essential oils of Artemisia absinthium, Melia azedarach, Trigonella foenum-graecum, and Peganum harmala on Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)

Imane Naimi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the repellent effects of powders and essential oils (EOs) of Artemisia absinthium, Melia azedarach, Trigonella foenum-graecum, and Peganum harmala on adult Tribolium castaneum. The results showed that the powders and EOs of Melia azedarach had the highest repellency rates, followed by Artemisia absinthium and Peganum harmala. Trigonella foenum-graecum had a lower repellency rate. These plants may serve as novel biological treatments to prevent insect infestations.

Combined reduced expression of two gene families lowers nicotine content to ultra-low levels in cultivated tobacco

Sheri P. Kernodle et al.

Summary: Reducing the expression of two gene families in tobacco can result in ultra-low nicotine accumulation. Current commercial tobacco cultivars do not meet the proposed standard of nicotine levels below 0.4 mg g(-1). However, this study successfully lowered nicotine levels below the standard by using RNAi technology and induced mutations.

Essential oils and their bioactive compounds as eco-friendly novel green pesticides for management of storage insect pests: prospects and retrospects

Anand Kumar Chaudhari et al.

Summary: Traditional synthetic pesticides used to control storage insect pests have drawbacks and the search for safer alternatives is urgent. Essential oils and their bioactive compounds have shown promising insecticidal efficacy and favorable safety profiles, but practical application is limited by issues such as volatility, water solubility, and susceptibility to degradation. Nanoencapsulation/nanoemulsion of essential oils is considered a promising tool to overcome these limitations and expand their applicability.

Aqueous and Ethanolic Plant Extracts as Bio-Insecticides-Establishing a Bridge between Raw Scientific Data and Practical Reality

Wilson R. Tavares et al.

Summary: The global demand for food production has led to increased pressure to produce faster and larger crop yields, resulting in the widespread use of synthetic pesticides. In response, a search for effective alternatives from nature, such as plant extracts, is ongoing. Research has identified various plants, including neem, chili, tobacco, and marigold, whose extracts show promising insecticidal activity and potential for use in sustainable agriculture.

Repellence and larvicidal effects of some selected plant extracts against adult Anopheles arabiensis and Aedes aegypti larvae under laboratory conditions

Melete Berhe et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the repellence activity of ethanol extracts of spearmint and rosemary leaves against adult female Anopheles arabiensis, as well as the larvacidal effect of neem seed powder against Aedes aegypti larvae. The results suggest that the ethanol extracts of spearmint and rosemary could be used as potential sources of repellents against An. arabiensis, while neem seed powder could be a potential source of larvicides against Ae. aegypti larvae.
