Highly Active Ice-Nucleating Particles at the Summer North Pole

Grace C. E. Porter et al.

Summary: The study found that during the summer of 2018, high concentrations of biological INPs were sporadically present at the North Pole. These concentrations sometimes reached levels similar to those recorded in mid-latitude locations strongly impacted by highly active biological INPs, in contrast to the Southern Ocean. Furthermore, using a balloon borne sampler, the study demonstrated that INP concentrations differed between the surface and higher in the boundary layer where clouds form. These findings suggest that Arctic climate is sensitive to transport from regions that are already experiencing climate change.

Aircraft observations of ice nucleating particles over the Northern China Plain: Two cases studies

Chuan He et al.

Summary: Airborne measurements were conducted to study the vertical distribution of ice nucleating particles (INPs) over the Northern China Plain, revealing that aerosols sampled at higher altitudes have better ice nucleation capacity. Additionally, a strong correlation was found between INPs sampled in low humidity areas and aerosol particles larger than 0.5 μm in diameter.

Concentration and variability of deposition-mode ice nucleating particles from Mt. Tai of China in the early summer

Kui Chen et al.

Summary: Concentrations and chemical composition of aerosol particles at different altitudes on Mt. Tai in China were analyzed, revealing that aerosol and INP concentrations are influenced by changes in the height of the planetary boundary layer. Organic carbon and sodium/potassium salt type aerosol particles may serve as efficient ice nuclei sources at night due to changes in aerosol characteristics.

The contribution of Saharan dust to the ice-nucleating particle concentrations at the High Altitude Station Jungfraujoch (3580 m a.s.l.), Switzerland

Cyril Brunner et al.

Summary: Investigating the frequency of Saharan dust events and their contribution to ice nucleating particle (INP) number concentrations, it was found that each dust event showed an increase in median INP concentrations compared to non-dust event periods, although not always statistically significant. Satellite data suggested that mineral dust is present outside of dust events at JFJ, albeit at lower concentrations, still impacting the INP population.

Mineral and biological ice-nucleating particles above the South East of the British Isles

A. Sanchez-Marroquin et al.

Summary: The study found that a fraction of aerosol samples collected over the UK contain Ice-Nucleating Particles (INPs) that may consist of mineral dust nucleating ice below -20 degrees C, while other INP types are responsible for ice nucleation at higher temperatures. Additionally, biological aerosol particles were detected in high concentrations in the boundary layer, suggesting they may significantly contribute to enhanced ice nucleation ability at temperatures above -20 degrees C. Organic material attached to mineral dust could play a role in this enhancement.
