Climate change projections for Greece in the 21st century from high-resolution EURO-CORDEX RCM simulations

Aristeidis K. Georgoulias et al.

Summary: Based on model simulations, Greece is projected to experience a warmer future, with an increase in hot days and tropical nights, and a decrease in frost days. Additionally, Greece may face a drier future.

Trends in drought occurrence and severity at mid-latitude European stations (1951-2015) estimated using standardized precipitation (SPI) and precipitation and evapotranspiration (SPEI) indices

Paulina Dukat et al.

Summary: One of the negative consequences of climate change in Europe is the increase in severity, frequency, and duration of droughts. This research analyzed the trends in drought severity and occurrence in Europe from 1951 to 2015 using standardized precipitation index and standardized precipitation and evapotranspiration index (SPEI). The study found that while there was no significant increase in the occurrence of dry months overall, there was an increase in the severity of summer droughts across all investigated stations.

Quantifying the Occurrence of Multi-Hazards Due to Climate Change

Diamando Vlachogiannis et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a climatic multi-hazard risk assessment for Greece, which uses a high-resolution climate database to perform a detailed evaluation of key climatic hazards and analyze their dynamics and spatial distribution. The study reveals that cold-temperature extremes dominate in mountainous regions, while warm extremes have a greater impact on the coasts and plains. Extreme rainfall is observed in the eastern mainland coasts, while windstorms occur in Crete and the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Projections suggest that there will be an increase in warm extremes in northern areas, becoming more prevalent throughout the country by the end of the century.

Identifying Degraded and Sensitive to Desertification Agricultural Soils in Thessaly, Greece, under Simulated Future Climate Scenarios

Orestis Kairis et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of future climate change on land degradation in Thessaly, Greece. The findings suggest that there will be an increase in temperature and a decrease in precipitation in the future, leading to a higher risk of desertification and soil loss in the study area.

Drylands face potential threat of robust drought in the CMIP6 SSPs scenarios

Hongwei Li et al.

Summary: In an increasingly globalized and warming world, drought can have devastating impacts on regional agriculture, water resources, and the ecological environment. Reliable prediction of future drought changes is especially important within the context of rapid warming. The results show that as emissions increase, the global climate environment becomes drier and droughts become more severe and longer-lasting, particularly in regions already classified as arid.

Assessing climate change impacts on wind characteristics in Greece through high resolution regional climate modelling

Theodoros Katopodis et al.

Summary: This study assessed the projected climatic changes in wind characteristics in Greece using the WRF model, finding significant increases in mean wind speeds and wind energy density. The variations in different parameters across regions indicate that Greece will be affected by climate change, especially in the north and central-western Aegean region and Crete.

Projection of Agricultural Water Stress for Climate Change Scenarios: A Regional Case Study of Iraq

Saleem A. Salman et al.

Summary: This study predicts potential future agricultural water stress in Iraq by projecting climatic water availability (CWA) and crop water demand (CWD). The results suggest a decrease in CWA and an increase in CWD due to rising temperatures, which could lead to a sharp rise in crop water stress in Iraq in the future.

Summary: The study found that the Mediterranean Basin has experienced more frequent extensive drought events since the late 1990s, with significant increases in drought area observed in both dry and humid areas. Additionally, the most severe drought events were more frequently detected when multiple drought indices were used.
