Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and its effects on human health: An overeview

Manthar Ali Mallah et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are chemical contaminants of environmental significance. PAH pollution mainly comes from anthropogenic sources and can pose a significant threat to human health. Long-term exposure to PAHs can lead to tumor development in multiple organs and increase the risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Studies have shown a relationship between PAH exposure, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis.

Assessment of Alkylated and Unsubstituted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Air in Urban and Semi-Urban Areas in Toronto, Canada

Maryam Moradi et al.

Summary: This study characterized 22 alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (alk-PAHs) in ambient air for the first time in urban and semi-urban locations in Toronto, Canada. The results showed that the toxic impact of alkylated and gaseous PAHs on air toxicity is significant and should not be neglected.

Variations in traffic-related polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 in Kanazawa, Japan, after the implementation of a new vehicle emission regulation

Wanli Xing et al.

Summary: A three-year sampling campaign in Kanazawa, Japan, found that the levels of PAHs decreased due to a new emission regulation. The study observed seasonal variations, with higher levels in winter and lower levels in summer. The ratios of certain PAHs showed stability and were less affected by the regulation, seasonal variations, and regional characteristics. By using specific ratio ranges, traffic emissions could be distinguished from other sources. Principal component analysis and positive matrix factorization were applied to further analyze traffic-related PAHs. Overall, this study confirmed the effectiveness of the new emission regulation and provided a range for identifying traffic emissions of PAHs.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds in ambient air in the surface minable area of Athabasca oil sands in Alberta (Canada)

Andrzej Wnorowski et al.

Summary: This study characterized the concentrations and spatiotemporal patterns of ambient air polycyclic aromatic compounds in the Athabasca oil sands region between 2011 and 2015. Alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were found to be the majority of PACs in air, with concentrations varying spatially and seasonally. PAC concentrations measured during wildfire events were the highest and enriched in higher molecular weight alk-PAHs.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in the Canadian environment: Sources and emissions

A. Berthiaume et al.

Summary: This article presents the current knowledge on Canadian PAC emission sources, with forest fires dominating the emissions nationally. Non-industrial sources are estimated to be the second largest contributor, showing moderate decreases in recent decades. Industrial point sources have seen considerable reductions, while fugitive emissions from other industrial sources remain a gap in our understanding. Overall, there is uncertainty in emissions data and regional/local scale examination is needed to determine the sources contributing most to human and ecosystem exposure.

Toxicity screening of air extracts representing different source sectors in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas: In vitro oxidative stress, pro-inflammatory response, and toxicogenomic analysis

S. Halappanavar et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the pulmonary toxicity of polycyclic aromatic carbon mixtures in different locations in Toronto, using in vitro toxicity assays. Results showed that the Spring season exhibited the most responsive characteristics to pollutants, with nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons driving the response at lower concentrations, while specific PAHs drove the response at the highest concentration tested.

Fu-Jie Zhu et al.

Summary: The study shows that atmospheric PAHs in Harbin, China have significantly decreased due to the Clean Air Action, with 35% of the decline attributed to meteorological factors. The implementation of the Action in Harbin has been proven to be the main reason for reducing atmospheric PAHs.

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on urban transportation and air quality in Canada

Xuelin Tian et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on urban transportation and air pollutant emissions in representative Canadian cities. It found that lockdown measures led to a decrease in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from urban vehicles, with a subsequent rebound. The study also identified strong correlations between the Air Quality Health Index, level of urban congestion, and concentrations of NO2 and CO during the pandemic, while SO2 did not show significant relation. The comprehensive analysis of changing fuel consumption, traffic volume, and emission levels can help government assess the impact and plan strategies for future pandemics.
