Ru(0001) surface electrochemistry in the presence of specifically adsorbing anions

Albert K. Engstfeld et al.

Summary: Investigating potential dependent surface processes on a Ru(0001) electrode revealed that the presence of strongly adsorbing anions in acid electrolyte can significantly impact the reactions occurring on the electrode surface. Further methods such as online DEMS measurements and operando SXRD measurements provided insights into the complex phenomena observed during the electrochemical processes.

Single-atom catalyst for high-performance methanol oxidation

Zhiqi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, Pt single atom supported on RuO2 exhibits highly active methanol oxidation compared to Pt single atom supported on carbon. The newly synthesized Pt-1/RuO2 catalyst shows significantly improved mass activity for methanol oxidation in alkaline media, surpassing most previously developed Pt-based catalysts. Additionally, Pt-1/RuO2 demonstrates high tolerance to CO poisoning and excellent catalytic stability, with the presence of unique Pt-O-3f-Ru-cus bonds contributing to lower energy barriers for the electrochemical dehydrogenation of methanol.

The role of ruthenium in improving the kinetics of hydrogen oxidation and evolution reactions of platinum

Shangqian Zhu et al.

Summary: Modifying Pt surfaces with foreign metals of higher oxophilicity is a promising approach to enhance hydrogen evolution and oxidation kinetics. This study on Ru-modified Pt reveals that the activity is proportional to the Ru coverage, with strain and electronic effects of the Pt substrate lowering the energy barrier and improving catalytic activities. This work not only deepens the understanding of hydrogen electrocatalysis mechanisms, but also guides the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts.
