Interface regulation of mixed matrix membranes by ultrathin MOF nanosheet for faster CO2 transfer

Jingmeng Wan et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy of interface regulation in mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) using newly designed metal organic framework nanosheets (MOFN) with H-bonding, resulting in significantly improved gas separation performance suitable for CO2 capture. The alignment of polymer-MOFN through H-bonding leads to contractile channels and abundant porosity, validating the enhanced CO2 permeability and separation factor over wide pressure and temperature ranges. This work not only provides two candidate membranes for selective CO2 removal from natural gas, but also delivers a design philosophy for constructing advanced MMMs.

Guining Chen et al.

Summary: Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) incorporating M-gallate (M = Ni, Co, Mg) MOF particles were fabricated using 6FDA-based polyimides for ethylene/ethane separation. Among the different MOF particles, Ni-gallate(F) showed the best compatibility with the polyimide, resulting in improved C2H4/C2H6 selectivity and permeability.

Metal-organic cages for molecular separations

Dawei Zhang et al.

Summary: Metal-organic cages, formed via coordination-driven self-assembly, show great promise as separation agents by selectively binding and distinguishing substances in solution through precise control of their structure. The use of cages as absorbents or incorporation into polymer membranes can enhance the efficiency and selectivity of separation processes. Challenges and potential future developments in using metal-organic cages for separations are also discussed.

MOF-Mediated Interfacial Polymerization to Fabricate Polyamide Membranes with a Homogeneous Nanoscale Striped Turing Structure for CO2/CH4 Separation

Chengli Jiao et al.

Summary: The study focuses on fabricating polyamide membranes with nanoscale striped Turing structure by adding Zr-based metal-organic framework UiO-66-NH2, which enhances the CO2/CH4 gas separation performance. Results show that membranes with 0.02 wt% UiO-66-NH2 exhibit improved CO2/CH4 selectivity and CO2 permeance, while membranes with 0.1 wt% UiO-66-NH2 demonstrate higher separation performance.

Single-Phase Covalent Organic Framework Staggered Stacking Nanosheet Membrane for CO2-Selective Separation

Pengyuan Wang et al.

Summary: Three types of high-quality beta-ketoenamine-type COF nanosheets with different pore sizes were developed and aggregated into ultrathin nanosheet membranes with distinctive staggered stacking patterns. The narrowed pore sizes derived from the micro-structures and selective adsorption capacities synergistically endowed the COF membranes with intriguing CO2-philic separation performances, among which TpPa-2 with medium pore size exhibited an optimal CO2/H-2 separation factor of 22 and a CO2 permeance of 328 gas permeation units at 298 K. This membrane performance reached the target of commercial feasibility for syngas separations.

Is Porosity at the MOF/Polymer Interface Necessarily an Obstacle to Optimal Gas-Separation Performances in Mixed Matrix Membranes?

Dong Fan et al.

Summary: The study challenges the assumption that avoiding interfacial porosity is always necessary for high gas-separation performance in MOF/polymer mixed matrix membranes. By investigating the NUS-8/PIM-1 MMM, researchers found that microvoids at the interface can actually enhance CO2 interactions and improve selectivity, leading to a new solubility-driven separation mechanism. This discovery has the potential to change current paradigms and pave the way for more efficient gas separation membranes.
