Optimization of Biodegradation Characteristics of Sphingopyxis sp. YF1 against Crude Microcystin-LR Using Response Surface Methodology

Isaac Yaw Massey et al.

Summary: This study assessed the biodegradation characteristics of strain YF1 against MC-LR under different environmental factors. The optimal conditions for biodegrading MC-LR using YF1 were determined using response surface methodology. The optimal conditions were found to be 30 degrees C, pH 7, and 3 mu g/mL MC-LR with a biodegradation efficiency of 100%.

Challenges of using blooms of Microcystis spp. in animal feeds: A comprehensive review of nutritional, toxicological and microbial health evaluation

Liang Chen et al.

Summary: Microcystis spp. are photosynthetic prokaryotes that can convert CO2 and minerals into organic compounds and biomass. While considered as a potential protein source for animal feeds, Microcystis also produce cyanobacterial toxins that present health hazards. Further research on nutritional value and safety is needed before incorporating Microcystis into animal feed ingredients.

Enhanced bioremediation of 2,3′,4,4′,5-pentachlorodiphenyl by consortium GYB1 immobilized on sodium alginate-biochar

Xiaofang Ouyang et al.

Summary: A novel polychlorinated biphenyl degrading consortium GYB1 capable of metabolizing PCB 118 was obtained and immobilized to prepare SC-GYB1 beads, which showed enhanced degradation efficiency of PCB 118. The immobilized consortium SC-GYB1 beads exhibited increased robustness to environmental stress and maintained considerable degradation ability even under Cd2+ stress.

Variability in microcystin quotas during a Microcystis bloom in a eutrophic lake

Susanna A. Wood et al.

Summary: This study found a strong positive correlation between Microcystis cell concentrations and microcystin quotas in waterbodies, indicating that higher cell densities can increase bloom toxicity potential. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed no relationship between microcystin quotas and the relative abundance of specific sequences.
