Domain-Adversarial Neural Networks for Deforestation Detection in Tropical Forests

Pedro J. Soto et al.

Summary: Many deep learning-based domain adaptation methods for remote sensing applications rely on adversarial training strategies to align features extracted from images of different domains. This study proposes a DL-based representation matching approach for domain adaptation in change detection tasks, which effectively mitigates the issue of imbalanced classes and improves the accuracy of cross-domain deforestation detection.

Spatial and temporal deep learning methods for deriving land-use following deforestation: A pan-tropical case study using Landsat time series

Robert N. Masolele et al.

Summary: This study assessed land-use classification methods following deforestation, finding that spatio-temporal models outperformed spatial or temporal models. Spatial patterns of land-use within a continent had more commonalities than temporal patterns across continents.

Spatio-Temporal Deep Learning Approach to Map Deforestation in Amazon Rainforest

Raian Maretto et al.

Summary: This study focuses on automatically mapping deforested areas in the Brazilian Amazon using deep learning techniques to aid in the formulation of effective deforestation containment policies. By introducing various domain-specific components and preprocessing methods to optimize the training dataset, the research proposes two spatio-temporal variations of the U-Net architecture, achieving an accuracy of approximately 95%.

More Diverse Means Better: Multimodal Deep Learning Meets Remote-Sensing Imagery Classification

Danfeng Hong et al.

Summary: This study introduces a general multimodal deep learning (MDL) framework for the classification and identification challenges in geoscience and remote sensing. By investigating a special case of multi-modality learning (MML), the study presents five fusion strategies and demonstrates how to train deep networks and build network architectures effectively. Experimental results on two different multimodal RS data sets confirm the efficiency and advantages of the proposed MDL framework.

Carbon loss from forest degradation exceeds that from deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon

Yuanwei Qin et al.

Summary: Forest loss in the Brazilian Amazon was higher in 2019 than in 2015, potentially due to loosened forest protection policies. Despite this, the net AGB loss in 2019 was three times smaller than in 2015, with forest degradation contributing three times more to the total AGB loss than deforestation.

Deep Learning for Regular Change Detection in Ukrainian Forest Ecosystem With Sentinel-2

Kostiantyn Isaienkov et al.

Summary: Logging is the main cause of reduction in global forest area, with forest clearcuts continuing to increase. Difficulty in timely tracking such incidents leads to gradual deforestation, highlighting the need for regular monitoring of forest cover changes. The article presents a baseline U-Net model for deforestation detection in a specific region in Ukraine, using Sentinel-2 imagery for training and evaluation, and focusing on the ability to utilize time-dependent imagery for improved forest change detection.
