Effects of Lake Nam Co and Surrounding Terrain on Extreme Precipitation Over Nam Co Basin, Tibetan Plateau: A Case Study

Zhizhan Zhao et al.

Summary: The Lake Nam Co (LNC) and surrounding topography on the Tibetan Plateau have significant impacts on extreme snowfall events. This study found that LNC plays a dominant role in the formation of these events, while the surrounding mountains amplify the lake effect precipitation. Low-level convective instability and water vapor convergence are crucial for the formation of extreme snowfall, and wind deflection and topographic lifting enhance precipitation and shift the distribution of the snow belt.

Surface friction contrast between water body and land enhances precipitation downwind of a large lake in Tibet

Summary: This study demonstrates the dynamic effect of water-land roughness on summer precipitation, showing that the friction contrast between water and land surfaces leads to changes in wind speed, enhancing precipitation downwind of the lake.

The increasing water clarity of Tibetan lakes over last 20 years according to MODIS data

Chong Liu et al.

Summary: Water clarity is a comprehensive indicator of the water environment status, with studies showing global decreases in inland and ocean water clarity due to climate change and human activities. This research focused on water clarity changes in 152 large lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, revealing a significant increase in Secchi Depth and its correlation with lake size, precipitation, suspended matter, fDOM, and chlorophyll-a concentration. The findings contribute to understanding inland water clarity changes and their implications for heat exchanges between lake water and the atmosphere.

Rapidly expanding lake heatwaves under climate change

R. Iestyn Woolway et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that lake heatwaves are increasing in intensity and duration in the Laurentian Great Lakes, the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth. The maximum spatial extent of lake heatwaves is influenced by inter-annual variations in winter ice cover and the timing of stratification onset in spring. The lengthening of the warm summer season and overall increase in surface water temperature have contributed to the development of larger lake heatwaves.

Contrasting hydrological and thermal intensities determine seasonal lake-level variations - a case study at Paiku Co on the southern Tibetan Plateau

Yanbin Lei et al.

Summary: The study found that the seasonal pattern of lake evaporation from Paiku Co was significantly influenced by the large lake heat storage, and the amplitude of seasonal lake-level variations was affected by contrasting hydrological and thermal intensities. Lake evaporation may play an important role in the different amplitudes of seasonal lake-level variations on the Tibetan Plateau.
