A Deep Active Learning Approach to the Automatic Classification of Volcano-Seismic Events

Grace F. Manley et al.

Summary: In this study, an approach to volcano-seismic event classification using active learning is proposed. The results show that models with data selected using active learning achieve better accuracy and AUC compared to random sampling. Additionally, active learning reduces the burden of labeling for certain datasets.

Automated Segmentation of Olivine Phenocrysts in a Volcanic Rock Thin Section Using a Fully Convolutional Neural Network

Artem Leichter et al.

Summary: This study presents an example of using machine learning to automatically characterize and interpret the characteristics of solid phases in thin sections. The focus is on olivine in volcanic rocks, with the aim of determining its magnesian number (mg#) and identifying different populations. The approach involves pre-processing, segmentation, and classification using deep learning, and establishing a functional relationship between backscattered electron (BSE) intensity and mg#. The high-resolution automatic characterization of mineral textures and compositions is demonstrated.

An attention-based U-Net for detecting deforestation within satellite sensor imagery

David John et al.

Summary: This paper implements and analyzes an Attention U-Net deep network for semantic segmentation of deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest and the Atlantic Forest using Sentinel-2 satellite sensor imagery. The results show that Attention U-Net outperforms other benchmark methods, achieving the highest F1-scores of 0.9550, 0.9769, and 0.9461 on each dataset. Attention U-Net is able to accurately detect non-forest polygons and provides the most accurate segmentation despite its reduced complexity and training time.
