Towards the Combination of C2RCC Processors for Improving Water Quality Retrieval in Inland and Coastal Areas

Jesus Soriano-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Sentinel-2 has great potential for monitoring water quality, especially in inland and coastal waters. The study compares the performance of the C2XC, C2RCC, and C2X processors in retrieving water surface reflectance and estimating water quality parameters, indicating potential for improvement but the need for recalibration or dynamic algorithm blending approaches in certain scenarios. Switching between different processors could enhance surface reflectance estimates and improve operational monitoring of water quality in various scenarios.

Multi-sensor and multi-platform consistency and interoperability between UAV, Planet CubeSat, Sentinel-2, and Landsat reflectance data

Jiale Jiang et al.

Summary: Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and satellite data have complementarity in terms of spectral characteristics and compatibility, but there may be spectral and spatial misalignments between them. This study assessed the spectral consistency between UAV and satellite multispectral imagery and found that radiometric correction and different ground features can affect their spectral consistency. It also discovered that spatial scale differences can impact the consistency between UAV and satellite data.

Monitoring Acid Mine Drainage's Effects on Surface Water in the Kizel Coal Basin with Sentinel-2 Satellite Images

Sergey V. Pyankov et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inter-annual and seasonal variability of acid mine drainage related surface water contamination in the Kizel coal basin using Sentinel-2 images from 2016 to 2019. The results showed a significant correlation between AMWI values and Fe-total concentrations at 5 out of 7 surface water sampling points. Surface water contamination reached its seasonal peak in July, following the snowmelt high water period, with excessive summer rainfall contributing to increased contamination. Contrarily, arid summer conditions led to decreased AMD discharge and Fe-total concentrations in the surface water.

Atmospheric and sunglint correction for retrieving chlorophyll-a in a productive tropical estuarine-lagoon system using Sentinel-2 MSI imagery

Matheus Henrique Tavares et al.

Summary: Remote monitoring of chlorophyll-a (chla) is widely used for assessing the trophic state of water bodies, but the algorithms applied in different optical water types still face uncertainties. The study evaluated state-of-the-art atmospheric correction and chla algorithms using Sentinel-2 MSI imagery in a tropical system, highlighting the importance of addressing atmospheric and adjacency effects. The research suggests the need to explore suitable combinations of AC + chla algorithms for different optical water types to enable global-scale retrievals of chlorophyll-a pigment using medium-resolution sensors.
