Decadal Changes in Glacier Area, Surface Elevation and Mass Balance for 2000-2020 in the Eastern Tanggula Mountains Using Optical Images and TanDEM-X Radar Data

Yushan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study findings reveal that glaciers in the eastern Tanggula Mountains are experiencing accelerated melting and mass loss, with lake-terminating glaciers showing more significant retreat and mass loss compared to land-terminating glaciers. Interestingly, the melting rate of lake-terminating glaciers is consistently lower than that of land-terminating glaciers in contrast to findings in other high mountain areas. Local topography and long-term increase in air temperature are identified as key factors influencing glacier changes in this region.

Rapid glacier mass loss in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau since the year 2000 from satellite observations

Fanyu Zhao et al.

Summary: A study found that maritime glaciers in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau have experienced significant mass loss over the past two decades, with the strongest depletion observed in the Hengduan Mountains. Glaciers in Bomi County play a dominant role in the regional mass balance, despite having a slower rate of elevation changes. The study also highlights the impact of glacier terminus types on melting, with lake-terminating glaciers experiencing higher mass loss rates.

Glacier Mass Balance in the Manas River Using Ascending and Descending Pass of Sentinel 1A/1B Data and SRTM DEM

Lili Yan et al.

Summary: This study utilized Sentinel-1A/1B satellite data to generate DEMs, evaluate the accuracy of INSAR DEMs, and estimate glacier elevation changes and mass balance. Results indicated significant glacier thinning over a 20-year period, with south-facing and east-facing aspects, slope, and elevation playing key roles in glacier melt.

Comparative analysis of the Copernicus, TanDEM-X, and UAV-SfM digital elevation models to estimate lavaka (gully) volumes and mobilization rates in the Lake Alaotra region (Madagascar)

Liesa Brosens et al.

Summary: Developments in remote sensing and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology have provided abundant topographic information. This study evaluates the performance of the TanDEM-X DEM in estimating gully volume and erosion rates. It is found that TanDEM-X data can accurately estimate the volume of large geomorphic features but underestimate the volume of smaller features. By introducing a breakpoint analysis, an area-volume relationship is established and regional erosion rates in Madagascar are assessed.

The joint driving effects of climate and weather changes caused the Chamoli glacier-rock avalanche in the high altitudes of the India Himalaya

Yushan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates a catastrophic rock-ice avalanche event in Chamoli, India Himalaya, using high-resolution satellite images. It finds that the event was caused by a glacier-rock landslide and highlights the joint effects of climate, weather changes, and steep geological conditions. The findings provide valuable evidence for understanding slope/glacier instability at high altitudes and emphasize the urgent need to identify glaciers at high risk of ice avalanches in the Himalaya and other high mountain ranges.

Error Characteristics of Pan-Arctic Digital Elevation Models and Elevation Derivatives in Northern Sweden

Martin Karlson et al.

Summary: The study found that the Arctic DEM, ALOS, and Copernicus have relatively high vertical accuracy, but large errors in elevation derivatives such as TWI and landform classification. The Copernicus DEM produced the most accurate elevation derivatives, closest to the reference DEM results, despite relatively high errors.

Estimating the Changes in Glaciers and Glacial Lakes in the Xixabangma Massif, Central Himalayas, between 1974 and 2018 from Multisource Remote Sensing Data

Yingzheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study estimated the glacier melting rate in the Xixabangma massif using various images and elevation data. The results showed a decrease in glacier area and an increase in glacial lake area, with three specific lakes expanding by over 100%. It indicated potential outburst risks for these lakes.

Applicability of Data Acquisition Characteristics to the Identification of Local Artefacts in Global Digital Elevation Models: Comparison of the Copernicus and TanDEM-X DEMs

Jana Maresova et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of global DEMs TanDEM-X DEM and Copernicus DEM in three major European mountain ranges, identifying large errors in TanDEM-X DEM and showcasing the success of the editing process in Copernicus DEM. The study also highlighted the importance of considering collection time when filling problematic sites with alternative DEMs to minimize temporal displacements.

Summary: Quantitative geomorphic research relies on accurate topographic data often collected through remote sensing methods. Different methods of data collection and resolution can impact data quality, this study introduces a new internal accuracy metric to evaluate DEM data quality, finding that Copernicus DEM provides the highest quality representation of landscapes.

Accelerated global glacier mass loss in the early twenty-first century

Romain Hugonnet et al.

Summary: The study found that glaciers around the world are melting at an accelerated rate, with contrasting patterns of mass loss in different geographical regions. Overall, glaciers are losing mass more rapidly, with similar or even larger acceleration rates than Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets taken separately. These findings also highlight the importance of understanding drivers that influence glacier change to predict future changes and mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise.

Regional and Altitude-Dependent Estimate of the SRTM C/X-Band Radar Penetration Difference on High Mountain Asia Glaciers

Chao Li et al.

Summary: This study estimated the penetration depth difference of C/X-band radar signals on glaciers in the HMA region, analyzed the spatial characteristics of altitude-dependent penetration depth, and identified a significant linear positive correlation between elevation and penetration depth difference in most regions. These results can serve as important reference data for estimating glacier mass balance in HMA using SRTM DEMs.
