Eulerian-Lagrangian modeling of spray G atomization with focus on vortex evolution and its interaction with cavitation

Wenchuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the internal flow and its role in energy consumption and emissions, focusing on the intricate three-phase flow patterns in an orifice. By analyzing vorticity interactions with cavitation, it is found that cavitation is triggered by vortex evolution. The study also successfully predicts spray morphologies using a coupled model that incorporates internal flow data, demonstrating less dependence on grid resolution and validating the proposed model.

Mesoscale eddies in the Black Sea: Characteristics and kinematic properties in a high-resolution ocean model

Ehsan Sadighrad et al.

Summary: Mesoscale eddies, filaments and meanders in the Black Sea play a crucial role in transporting water, nutrients, and biomass between coastal regions and the open sea. The generation of eddies peaks in spring and summer, while they decrease in fall and winter, demonstrating their importance for vertical water transport and associated biochemical properties.

Internal Waves as a Source of Concentric Rings within Small River Plumes

Alexander Osadchiev et al.

Summary: This study focuses on concentric rings observed in small river plumes worldwide, revealing them as surface manifestations of high-frequency internal waves generated near river mouths. The analysis shows that the propagation of these waves does not induce offshore material transport within the plume, contrary to previous numerical modeling studies. The research also provides an explanation for misleading material features observed in numerical simulations, and suggests directions for future studies on high-frequency internal waves in small river plumes.

Response of a Small River Plume on Wind Forcing

Alexander Osadchiev et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of wind forcing on river plume dynamics, utilizing quadcopters for aerial observations and synchronous in situ measurements of wind forcing. The results reveal a linear relationship between advection velocity of the outer plume border and wind speed, with reversals in upstream/downstream plume spreading occurring under moderate wind forcing conditions.

Characteristics of topographic submesoscale eddies off the Crimea coast from high-resolution satellite optical measurements

Anna Aleskerova et al.

Summary: Long-term arrays of satellite optical measurements were used to study the characteristics of submesoscale eddy (SE) dynamics along the Crimean coast, revealing the geometric and kinematic properties of these eddies and their impact on suspended matter redistribution. Analysis based on 4D variational assimilation method from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 images showed that submesoscale cyclonic eddies were more common than anticyclones, with orbital velocities reaching 0.15 m/s. High-resolution satellite imagery allowed for the observation of complex submesoscale processes, such as the formation of chains of cyclonic eddies and mushroom-like current structures.

Hydrophysical Structure and Current Dynamics of the Kodor River Plume

A. A. Osadchiev et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the buoyant plume generated by the Kodor River, the largest river in Abkhazia and the northeastern coast of the Black Sea. It found that the Kodor plume has characteristics such as relatively shallow, large area, quick response to wind forcing, and spatial inhomogeneity. These findings are important for understanding the dynamics of buoyant plumes formed by rivers with small discharge rates.
