An Overview of the Applications of Earth Observation Satellite Data: Impacts and Future Trends

Qiang Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the impacts and future trends in the use of Earth observation (EO) satellite data based on an analysis of 15 widely used EO satellites. The results show an exponential increase in the number of publications and citations referencing EO satellites, but a decrease in the number of articles referencing specific satellites. The majority of papers related to EO satellites are published in a small number of journals. The authors constructed a remote sensing impact factor (RSIF) to measure the impacts of EO satellites and predict future trends in their data applications. Landsat, Sentinel, MODIS, Gaofen, and WorldView are identified as the most significant current EO satellite missions, with MODIS data having the widest range of applications. Sentinel is expected to have the greatest influence in the next five years.

Four challenges when conducting bibliometric reviews and how to deal with them

Joao Paulo Romanelli et al.

Summary: The evidence base in environmental sciences is growing, and researchers face challenges in handling large volumes of data to support comprehensive studies. Bibliometrics can provide insights into research directions, but researchers may face challenges in conducting bibliometric reviews and mapping. Addressing these challenges and using bibliometric methods effectively can enhance the quality of research outputs in environmental sciences.

Summary: Academic review articles play a significant role in transforming research communities by curating and simplifying literature, highlighting important bridging works, and ultimately characterizing research topics. They also impact the citations of specific papers, often leading to a loss in future citations for the individual articles mentioned in the reviews.
