A global 1-km downscaled SMAP soil moisture product based on thermal inertia theory

Bin Fang et al.

Summary: This study developed a downscaling algorithm based on thermal inertia theory to improve the spatial resolution of passive microwave soil moisture products from tens of kilometers to 1 km. The results showed that the downscaling model performed better in middle or low latitudes and in warm months. Validation with in situ soil moisture observations confirmed the reliability of the downscaled data.

Performance of rocking foundations on unsaturated soil layers with variable groundwater levels

Matthew M. Turner et al.

Summary: The rocking foundation design scheme has the potential to limit loads transmitted to the superstructure, but can lead to increased settlements and rotations at the foundation level. This study assessed the response of a rocking foundation embedded in soil with varying degrees of saturation and developed design considerations based on saturation. Lowering the water table depth in saturated soils can reduce foundation settlements and rotations.

Can Surface Soil Moisture Information Identify Evapotranspiration Regime Transitions?

Jianzhi Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reliability of surface soil moisture in detecting evapotranspiration regime transitions. The results demonstrate that surface soil moisture and soil moisture at different depths are hydraulically linked and have synchronized evapotranspiration regime transitions. Therefore, surface soil moisture can be used for large-scale land-atmosphere exchange analysis.

Undrained Seismic Compression of Unsaturated Sand

W. Rong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the volumetric changes of unsaturated sand specimens during undrained cyclic shear tests, revealing a nonlinear relationship between volumetric contraction and degree of saturation. The largest contraction occurred at a saturation degree of 0.4, coinciding with the largest decrease in mean effective stress. The sand specimens followed a wetting-path scanning curve during shearing, with small changes in matric suction.

Evaluation of Soil Moisture Climatology and Anomaly Components Derived From ERA5-Land and GLDAS-2.1 in China

Zhiyong Wu et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of GLDAS-2.1 and ERA5-Land global soil moisture products in China. GLDAS-2.1 showed higher temporal precision in the climatology evaluation, while ERA5-Land had larger biases in semi-humid areas. The two products performed similarly in the anomaly evaluation.

Summary: This study utilized SAR images to characterize the ground displacement and estimate the damaged areas in Croatia following the earthquake. By using InSAR technique and MAD+NB method, the overall accuracy of approximately 68% was achieved, despite limitations in densely vegetated areas. Training and validating the data were crucial in the process.
