Summary: In this study, chitooligosaccharide (COS) and salicylic acid (SA) conjugates were synthesized and oxidized alginate (OA) and gelatin hydrogels were fabricated. Tests confirmed successful synthesis of COS-SA conjugates with improved antioxidant activity. The hydrogels showed non-cytotoxicity and wound healing activity, indicating their potential for wound healing applications.

Selecting the right enzyme and substrate properties is crucial in directing synthesis towards specific COS types, but scaling processes for specific mixtures is challenging due to low solubility and reaction heterogeneity. Immobilizing enzymes can help overcome these hurdles, and COS have bioactive properties including anti-inflammatory activity.
